Abstract

A liner includes a rubber liner portion, and a polyurethane liner portion disposed on a surface of the rubber liner portion. The rubber polyurethane liner can be applied to cover surfaces of process support elements used to transport or handle process material such as tar sand slurry. The rubber polyurethane liner increases the effectiveness and operating lifetimes of such process support elements.

Claims (34)

1 . A liner comprising:

a rubber liner portion; and

a polyurethane liner portion disposed on a surface of the rubber liner portion.

2 . The liner of claim 1 , further comprising an adhesive disposed between the rubber liner portion and the polyurethane liner portion.

3 . The liner of claim 1 , further comprising a primer disposed between the rubber liner portion and the polyurethane liner portion.

4 . The liner of claim 1 , wherein the rubber liner portion has a durometer measure substantially within the range of 20 to 60 with a type A durometer.

5 . A lined support element comprising:

a support element;

a rubber liner portion disposed on a surface of the support element; and

a polyurethane liner portion disposed on a surface of the rubber liner portion.

6 . The lined support element of claim 5 , wherein the support element is composed at least in part of steel.

7 . The lined support element of claim 5 , wherein the support element comprises a pipe.

8 . The lined support element of claim 5 , further comprising a first flange disposed on a first end of the support element, and a second flange disposed on an opposing end of the support element.

9 . The lined support element of claim 8 , wherein the first flange is a slip-on flange, and the second flange is a lap joint flange.

10 . The lined support element of claim 5 , wherein the rubber liner portion is substantially enclosed by the support element and the polyurethane liner portion.

11 . The lined support element of claim 5 , wherein the lined support element comprises an angled pipe section.

12 . The lined support element of claim 5 , further comprising an adhesive disposed between the support element and the rubber liner portion.

13 . The lined support element of claim 12 , further comprising a priming compound disposed between the support element portion and the adhesive.

14 . The lined support element of claim 12 , further comprising tack cement disposed between the adhesive and the rubber liner portion.

15 . The lined support element of claim 5 , further comprising an adhesive disposed between the rubber liner portion and the polyurethane liner portion.

16 . The lined support element of claim 15 , further comprising a priming compound disposed between the rubber liner portion and the adhesive.

17 . The lined support element of claim 5 , wherein the polyurethane liner portion is also disposed on an end surface of the support element.

18 . The lined support element of claim 5 , wherein the rubber liner portion has a durometer measure substantially within the range of 20 to 60 with a type A durometer.

19 . A process comprising the steps of:

applying a rubber liner portion to a surface of a support element;

curing the rubber liner portion;

applying a polyurethane liner portion to a surface of the rubber liner portion; and

curing the polyurethane liner portion.

20 . The process of claim 19 , further comprising the step of:

applying the polyurethane liner to form a simply connected continuum that extends onto a surface of the support element, such that the rubber liner becomes enclosed by the polyurethane liner and the support element.

21 . The process of claim 19 , further comprising the step of:

preparing the surface of the support element and applying an adhesive to the surface of the support element, prior to applying the rubber liner portion.

22 . The process of claim 19 , further comprising the step of:

buffing the rubber liner portion and applying an adhesive to the surface of the rubber liner portion, prior to applying the polyurethane liner portion.
