Abstract

A method of interleaving blocks of indexed data of varying length is disclosed. The method includes the steps of: providing a set of basic Interleavers comprising a family of one or more permutations of the indexed data and having a variable length; selecting one of the basic Interleavers based upon a desired Interleaver length L; and adapting the selected basic Interleaver to produce an Interleaver having the desired Interleaver length L.

Claims (37)

1. A method of interleaving information bits in an encoder, the method comprising:

determining a basic interleaver based on an input block size of information bits, wherein the basic interleaver is represented by interleaving indices; and

adapting the basic interleaver to generate a desired interleaver length,

wherein the basic interleaver uses two-dimensional permutation of an input index to generate an output index.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the basic interleaver comprises choosing from a plurality of basic interleavers.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein adapting the basic interleaver comprises pruning at least one interleaving index larger than the input block size.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein adapting the basic interleaver comprises selectively using the interleaving indices to correspond to the input block size.

5. A communication system for use in wireless communication, the communication system comprising:

an interleaver determining a basic interleaver based on an input block size of information bits and adapting the basic interleaver to generate a desired interleaver length, wherein the basic interleaver is represented by interleaving indices; and

an encoder configured to encode output of the interleaver,

wherein the basic interleaver uses two-dimensional permutation of an input index to generate an output index.

6. The communication system of claim 5 , wherein the interleaver determines the basic interleaver by choosing from a plurality of basic interleavers.

7. The communication system of claim 5 , wherein the interleaver adapts the basic interleaver by pruning at least one interleaving index larger than the input block size.

8. The communication system of claim 5 , wherein the interleaver adapts the basic interleaver by selectively using the interleaving indices to correspond to the input block size.

9. A method for constructing an interleaver for interleaving blocks of indexed data having indices, the blocks having a varying length, the method comprising:

providing one or more parameters, the values of the one or more parameters based on a desired interleaver size; and

constructing the interleaver based on the one or more parameters, the interleaver having a variable length and comprising a family of one or more permutations of the indexed data,

wherein constructing the interleaver comprises selecting an index for the interleaver based on the one or more parameters and constructing the interleaver using the selected index, the index selected according to a range of the desired interleaver size.

10. An interleaver manufactured in accordance with the method set forth in claim 9 .

11. The method according to claim 9 , further comprising:

providing a turbo encoder comprising two or more constituent encoders connected together; and

performing interleaving using the turbo encoder.

12. An interleaver manufactured in accordance with the method set forth in claim 11 .

13. The method according to claim 9 , further comprising:

providing a turbo code encoder comprising two or more constituent code encoders connected together and to the interleaver; and

turbo encoding the indexed data after performing interleaving using the interleaver of the turbo code encoder.

14. An interleaver manufactured in accordance with the method set forth in claim 13 .

15. A method of interleaving information bits in an encoder, the method comprising:

determining a basic block interleaver based on an input block size of information bits, wherein the basic block interleaver is represented by interleaving indices; and

adapting the basic block interleaver to generate a desired block interleaver length.

16. A communication system for use in wireless communication, the communication system comprising:

an interleaver determining a basic block interleaver based on an input block size of information bits and adapting the basic block interleaver to generate a desired block interleaver length; and

an encoder configured to encode output of the interleaver,

wherein the basic block interleaver is represented by interleaving indices.

17. A method for constructing a block interleaver for interleaving blocks of indexed data having indices, the blocks having a varying length, the method comprising:

providing one or more parameters, the values of the one or more parameters based on a desired block interleaver size; and

constructing the block interleaver based on the one or more parameters, the block interleaver having a variable length and comprising a family of one or more permutations of the indexed data.
