Surgical apparatus and power module for same, and a method of preparing a surgical apparatus
A surgical power tool includes a hand unit and a detachable power module received in the hand unit to provide power to the hand unit. The power module includes a housing, an electric motor in the housing to provide mechanical energy to the hand unit, an electrical power supply in the housing to provide electrical energy to the electric motor, and an electronic controller in the housing for controlling the electric motor. Since the power module is received in the hand unit, there is no need for the power module to be sterilized.
1 . A surgical apparatus comprising a hand unit and a detachable power module coupled to said hand unit for providing power to said hand unit, said power module comprising:
a housing;
an electric motor in said housing to provide mechanical energy to said hand unit;
an electrical power supply in said housing to provide electrical energy to said electric motor; and
an electronic controller in said housing for controlling said electric motor.
2 . A surgical apparatus according to claim 1 , said hand unit being sterile and said power module being non-sterile.
3 . A surgical apparatus according to claim 2 , said hand unit comprising a receptacle having a lid, said power module being received within said receptacle in said hand unit and being sealed therein by said lid, such that an exterior of said hand unit remains sterile even after the non-sterile power module is received therein.
4 . A surgical apparatus according to claim 1 , said electric motor comprising a self-aligning driver, which automatically aligns with and engages a slotted drive shaft of said hand unit when the power module is attached to said hand unit.
5 . A surgical apparatus according to claim 1 , said power module further comprising an annular ridge that engages a retainer in said hand unit, thereby preventing the power module from becoming accidentally detached from said hand unit.
6 . A surgical apparatus according to claim 1 , said power module further comprising a safety switch in said housing, said safety switch disconnects the electrical power supply from said electric motor until said safety switch is engaged by an engagement contact in said hand unit when said power module is attached to said hand unit.
7 . A surgical apparatus according to claim 1 , said power module further comprising a speed control mechanism in communication with said electric motor to control a speed of said electric motor.
8 . A surgical apparatus according to claim 1 , said electronic controller comprising a programmable electronic controller, which is capable of storing a plurality of programs for monitoring and controlling functions of said power module.
9 . A power module for use with a surgical apparatus, said power module comprising:
a housing;
an electric motor in said housing to provide mechanical energy to said hand unit;
an electrical power supply in said housing to provide electrical energy to said electric motor; and
an electronic controller in said housing for controlling said electric motor.
10 . A power module according to claim 9 , said power module being non-sterile.
11 . A power module according to claim 9 , said electric motor comprising a self-aligning driver, adapted to align with and engage a slotted drive shaft of a hand unit when the power module is attached to the hand unit.
12 . A power module according to claim 9 , said power module further comprising an annular ridge adapted to engage a retainer in a hand unit, to prevent the power module from becoming accidentally detached from the hand unit.
13 . A power module according to claim 9 , said power module further comprising a safety switch in said housing, said safety switch disconnects the electrical power supply from said electric motor until said power module is attached to a hand unit.
14 . A power module according to claim 9 , said power module further comprising a speed control sensor in communication with said electric motor to monitor a speed of said electric motor.
15 . A power module according to claim 9 , said electronic controller comprising a programmable electronic controller, which is capable of storing a plurality of programs for monitoring and controlling functions of said power module.
16 . A method of preparing a surgical apparatus for surgery, the method comprising:
(a) sterilizing a hand unit;
(b) inserting a power module comprising an electric motor, a power supply, and an electronic controller in the receptacle in the hand unit; and
(c) sealing the power module inside the receptacle in the hand unit.
17 . A method of preparing a surgical apparatus according to claim 16 , further comprising:
(d) providing a sterile transfer sleeve;
(e) installing the sterile transfer sleeve on an opening of the receptacle of the hand unit prior to inserting the power module in the receptacle of the hand unit in step (b); and
(f) removing the transfer sleeve after the power module has been installed in step (b) and prior to sealing the receptacle in step (c).
18 . A method of preparing a surgical apparatus according to claim 17 , wherein the sterile transfer sleeve comprises a lid cover, which extends from the transfer sleeve.
