Abstract

An apparatus for expanding a tubular member comprising a support member, an expansion device for radially expanding the tubular member movably coupled to the support member for longitudinal displacement relative to the support member, at least one pressure chamber defined by and positioned between the support member and expansion device, and one or more releasable supports coupled to the support member adapted to support the tubular member, wherein the releasable supports are positioned above the expansion device.

Claims (113)

1. An apparatus for radially expanding and plastically deforming a tubular member, comprising:

a support member, comprising:

an expansion device for radially expanding and plastically deforming the tubular member movably coupled to the support member for longitudinal displacement relative to the support member;

at least one pressure chamber defined by and positioned between the support member and expansion device; and

at least one releasable support coupled to the support member adapted to support the tubular member;

wherein the at least one releasable support is positioned above the expansion device.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the expansion device includes one or more tubular pistons.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one releasable support comprises at least one of the following:

a hydraulic slip;

a mechanical slip; and

a drag block.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the expansion device includes:

one or more annular pistons; and

an expansion cone coupled to the annular pistons.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein one or more of the annular pistons include an expansion cone.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one pressure chamber comprises at least one annular pressure chamber.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one releasable support includes a plurality of releasable supports that engage a radially nonexpanded portion of the tubular member.

The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the expansion device comprises a tapered outer expansion surface having an angle of attack ranging from about 5 to 30 degrees; wherein the tapered outer expansion surface of the expansion device comprises a D2 steel; and wherein the tapered outer expansion surface of the expansion device comprises a surface hardness ranging from about 58 to 62 Rockwell C.

9. An apparatus for expanding a tubular member, comprising:

a support member comprising a fluid passage,

an expansion device movably coupled to the support member comprising an expansion cone and a tubular piston operably coupled to the expansion cone;

at least one pressure chamber defined by and positioned between the support member and the expansion device fluidicly coupled to the first fluid passage; and

one or more releasable supports coupled to the support member adapted to support the tubular member;

wherein the releasable supports are positioned above the expansion device.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the expansion device is movably coupled to the support member for longitudinal displacement relative to the support member.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the pressure chamber comprises an expandable pressure chamber.

12. An apparatus for radially expanding and plastically deforming a tubular member, comprising:

a support member comprising a fluid passage that defines a throat passage;

an expansion device for radially expanding and plastically deforming the tubular member movably coupled to the support member for longitudinal displacement relative to the support member;

at least one pressure chamber defined by and positioned between the support member and expansion device fluidicly coupled to the first fluid passage; and

releasable supports coupled to the support member adapted to support the tubular member;

wherein the releasable supports are positioned above the expansion device;

wherein the expansion device comprises:

an annular piston that mates with and receives the support member and is received and mates with the tubular member;

a tubular extension coupled to the annular piston; and

an annular tapered expansion cone coupled to an end of the tubular extension.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the releasable supports comprise:

one or more hydraulic slips coupled to the support member and fluidicly coupled to the fluid passage of the support member.

14. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the releasable supports comprise:

one or more mechanical slips coupled to the support member and positioned above the expansion device adapted to controllably engage a radially nonexpanded portion of the tubular member.

15. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the releasable supports comprise:

one or more drag blocks coupled to the support member and positioned above the expansion device adapted to controllably engage a radially nonexpanded portion of the tubular member.

16. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the releasable supports comprise:

one or more hydraulic slips coupled to the support member and fluidicly coupled to the fluid passage of the support member for engaging a portion of the tubular member that has not been radially expanded;

one or more mechanical slips coupled to the support member and positioned above the expansion device adapted to controllably engage a radially nonexpanded portion of the tubular member: and

one or more drag blocks coupled to the support member and positioned above the expansion device adapted to controllably engage the radially nonexpanded portion of the tubular member.

17. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the expansion device comprises:

an adjustable expansion device; and

a non-adjustable expansion device.

The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the expansion device comprises a tapered outer expansion surface having an angle of attack ranging from about 5 to 30 degrees; wherein the tapered outer expansion surface of the expansion device comprises a D2 steel: and wherein the tapered outer expansion surface of the expansion device comprises a surface hardness ranging from about 58 to 62 Rockwell C.

19. The apparatus of claim 12 ; wherein the releasable supports engage a radially non expanded portion of the tubular member.

20. An apparatus for radially expanding and plastically deforming a tubular member, comprising:

a support member comprising a fluid passage that defines a throat passage;

an expansion device for radially expanding and plastically deforming the tubular member movably coupled to the support member for longitudinal displacement relative to the support member;

at least one pressure chamber defined by and positioned between the support member and expansion device fluidicly coupled to the first fluid passage; and

releasable supports coupled to the support member adapted to support the tubular member;

wherein the releasable supports are positioned above the expansion device:

wherein the expansion device comprises:

an annular piston that mates with and receives the support member and is received and mates with the tubular member:

a tubular extension coupled to the annular piston; and

an annular tapered expansion cone coupled to an end of the tubular extension:

wherein the releasable supports comprise:

one or more hydraulic slips coupled to the support member and fluidicly coupled to the fluid passage of the support member for engaging a portion of the tubular member that has not been radially expanded;

one or more mechanical slips coupled to the support member and positioned above the expansion device adapted to controllably engage a radially nonexpanded portion of the tubular member; and

one or more drag blocks coupled to the support member and positioned above the expansion device adapted to controllably engage the radially nonexpanded portion of the tubular member;

wherein the expansion device comprises:

an adjustable expansion device; and

a non-adjustable expansion device; and

wherein the expansion device comprises a tapered outer expansion surface having an angle of attack ranging from about 5 to 30 degrees; wherein the tapered outer expansion surface of the expansion device comprises a D2 steel; and wherein the tapered outer expansion surface of the expansion device comprises a surface hardness ranging from about 58 to 62 Rockwell C.

21. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the at least one releasable support comprises at least one releasable locking member for preventing movement of the tubular member in at least a single direction.

22. An apparatus for radially expanding and plastically deforming an expandable tubular member, comprising:

an expansion device for radially expanding and plastically deforming the expandable tubular member;

a support member;

an actuator coupled to the expansion device and the support member for displacing the expansion device in the longitudinal direction relative to the tubular member; and

a locking device for preventing movement of the expandable tubular member in at least a single direction;

wherein the locking device is positioned above the expansion device; and

wherein the locking device comprises one or more of the following:

hydraulic slips;

mechanical slips; or

drag blocks.

23. An apparatus for radially expanding and plastically deforming an expandable tubular member, comprising:

an expansion device for radially expanding and plastically deforming the expandable tubular member;

a support member:

an actuator coupled to the expansion device and the support member for displacing the expansion device in the longitudinal direction relative to the tubular member; and

a locking device for preventing movement of the expandable tubular member in at least a single direction;

wherein the locking device is positioned above the expansion device:

wherein the expansion device comprises a tapered outer expansion surface having an angle of attack ranging from about 5 to 30 degrees;

wherein the tapered outer expansion surface of the expansion device comprises a D2 steel; and

wherein the tapered outer expansion surface of the expansion device comprises a surface hardness ranging from about 58 to 62 Rockwell C.

24. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the at least one releasable support comprises at least one releasable member for preventing movement of the tubular member.

25. An apparatus for radially expanding and plastically deforming an expandable tubular member, comprising:

an expansion device for radially expanding and plastically deforming the expandable tubular member:

a support member;

an actuator coupled to the expansion device and the support member for displacing the expansion device in the longitudinal direction relative to the tubular member; and

a device for preventing movement of the expandable tubular member;

wherein the device is positioned above the expansion device, and

wherein the device comprises one or more of the following:

hydraulic slips;

mechanical slips; or

drag blocks.

26. An apparatus for radially expanding and plastically deforming an expandable tubular member, comprising:

an expansion device for radially expanding and plastically deforming the expandable tubular member;

a support member;

an actuator coupled to the expansion device and the support member for displacing the expansion device in the longitudinal direction relative to the tubular member; and

a device for preventing movement of the expandable tubular member;

wherein the device is positioned above the expansion device;

wherein the expansion device comprises a tapered outer expansion surface having an angle of attack ranging from about 5 to 30 degrees; wherein the tapered outer expansion surface of the expansion device comprises a D2 steel; and wherein the tapered outer expansion surface of the expansion device comprises a surface hardness ranging from about 58 to 62 Rockwell C.

27. An apparatus for radially expanding and plastically deforming a tubular member, comprising:

a support member;

an expansion device for radially expanding and plastically deforming the tubular member movably coupled to the support member for longitudinal displacement relative to the support member;

at least one pressure chamber defined by and positioned between the support member and expansion device; and

at least one releasable support coupled to the support member adapted to support the tubular member;

wherein the at least one releasable support is positioned above the expansion device; and wherein the expansion device includes one or more tubular pistons.
