Abstract

A service appliance is installed between production servers running service applications and service users. The production servers and their service applications provide services to the service users. In the event that a production server is unable to provide its service to users, the service appliance can transparently intervene to maintain service availability. To maintain transparency to service users and service applications, service users are located on a first network and production servers are located on a second network. The service appliance assumes the addresses of the service users on the second network and the addresses of the production servers on the first network. Thus, the service appliance obtains all network traffic sent between the production server and service users. While the service application is operating correctly, the service appliance forwards network traffic between the two networks using various network layers.

Claims (41)

1. A service appliance comprising:

a network interface adapted to connect with a network including a production server providing a first service and a client system accessing the first service, such that network traffic between the production server and the client system is received by the service appliance; and

at least one information processing device adapted to execute at least one software application;

wherein the network interface is adapted to connect with the network having a configuration comprising:

a first network adapted to redirect network communications addressed to a client system to a service appliance; and

a second network adapted to redirect network communications addressed to a production server to the service appliance;

wherein the service appliance is adapted to transfer the network communications received from the first network to the second network and to transfer network communications received from the second network to the first network.

2. The service appliance of claim 1 , wherein the client system is associated with the second network and the production server is associated with the first network.

3. The service appliance of claim 1 , wherein the first and second networks are specified with a networking protocol.

4. The service appliance of claim 3 , wherein the networks are configured to operate using the 802.1q networking standard.

5. The service appliance of claim 3 , wherein the networking protocol is associated with a data link layer of an OSI architecture.

6. The service appliance of claim 3 , wherein the networking protocol is associated with multiple layers of an OSI architecture.

7. The service appliance of claim 1 , wherein the service appliance is adapted to replace a network identifier included with the network communications received from the first network with a network identifier associated with the second network.

8. The service appliance of claim 1 , wherein the service appliance is adapted to replace a network identifier included with the network communications received from the second network with a network identifier associated with the first network.

9. The service appliance of claim 1 , wherein the service appliance is further adapted to identify network communications including administrator instructions directed to the production server and to determine if the administrator instructions satisfy at least one criteria.

10. The service appliance of claim 9 , wherein in response to the administrator instructions failing to satisfy the criteria, the service appliance is adapted to lectively discard or alter the network communications including the administrator instructions.

11. A method of configuring a communications network, the method comprising:

creating first and second networks on the communications network;

associating a production server with the first network, thereby enabling the assignment of at least a first address on the first network n to the service appliance; and

associating a client system with the second network, thereby enabling the assignment of at least a second address on the second network to the service appliance at; and

wherein the first address corresponds to an address of the client system on the second network and the second address corresponds with an address of the production service on the first network.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the service appliance is adapted to automatically determine at least one of the first and second address.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the service appliance is adapted to receive a configuration including at least one of the first and second address.

14. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

receiving a data packet associated with the second network and directed to the second address from the client system; and

redirecting the data packet to the production server on the first network.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein redirecting the data packet comprises reassociating the data packet with the first network and forwarding the data packet to an address within the first network corresponding with the second address of the second network.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein reassociating the data packet comprises replacing a network identifier associated with the second network and included with the data packet with a network identifier associated with the first network.

17. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

receiving a data packet associated with the first network and directed to the first address from the production server; and

redirecting the data packet to the client system on the second network.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein redirecting the data packet comprises reassociating the data packet with the second network and forwarding the data packet to an address within the second network corresponding with the first address of the first network.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein reassociating the data packet comprises replacing a network identifier associated with the first network and included with the data packet with a network identifier associated with the second network.

20. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first and second networks are specified with a networking protocol.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein the networks are configured via and utilize for operation 802.1q.

22. The method of claim 20 , wherein the networking protocol is associated with a data link layer of an OSI architecture.

23. The method of claim 20 , wherein the networking protocol is associated with multiple layers of an OSI architecture.

24. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

identifying a data packet including administrator instructions directed to the production server;

determining if the administrator instructions satisfy at least one criteria; and

in response to the administrator instructions failing to satisfy the criteria, discarding or altering the data packet including the administrator instructions.
