Abstract

A color measurement apparatus is adapted as an attachment for a personal computing system. An interface integral to the color measurement apparatus couples the color measurement apparatus to the personal computing system. A computer pointing device integral to the color measurement apparatus provides a pointer input for the personal computing system. A spectral sensing device integral to the color measurement apparatus measures light received via an input port in a plurality of spectral bands. A light source integral to the color measurement apparatus emits light external to the color measurement apparatus. The color measurement apparatus is operable in first, second and third modes of operation. In the first mode of operation, the computer pointing device provides pointer input of a user to the personal computing system. In the second mode of operation, the spectral sensing device measures light generated by a display of the personal computing system. In the third mode of operation, the light source provides light to a printed object printed by a printer coupled to the personal computing system and the spectral sensing device is adapted to receive and measure light that is returned from the printed object.

Claims (28)

1. A color measurement apparatus adapted as an attachment for coupling to a personal computing system, comprising:

an interface integral to the color measurement apparatus, wherein the interface couples the color measurement apparatus to the personal computing system;

a computer pointing device integral to the color measurement apparatus, wherein the computer pointing device provides a pointer input for the personal computing system;

a spectral sensing device integral to the color measurement apparatus, wherein the spectral sensing device has an input port, wherein the spectral sensing devices measures light received via the input port in a plurality of spectral bands; and

a light source integral to the color measurement apparatus, wherein the light source emits light external to the color measurement apparatus;

wherein, the color measurement apparatus is operable in at least first, second and third modes of operation;

wherein, in the first mode of operation, the computer pointing device integral to the color measurement apparatus provides pointer input of a user to the personal computing system;

wherein, in the second mode of operation, the spectral sensing device integral to the color measurement apparatus measures light generated external to the color measurement apparatus, wherein the spectral sensing device is adapted to receive light via the input port that is generated by a display of the personal computing system, wherein, under software control, one or more signals for controlling the display are adjusted based on one or more measurements of light generated by the display of the personal computing system;

wherein, in the third mode of operation, the light source integral to the color measurement apparatus is activated and emits light external to the color measurement apparatus, wherein the light source is adapted to provide light to a printed object printed by a printer coupled to the personal computing system and the spectral sensing device is adapted to receive light via the input port that is returned from the printed object, wherein, under software control, one or more pigments for the printer are adjusted based on one or more measurements of light returned from the printed object.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the spectral sensing device comprises at least three spectral sensors and three filters permitting transmission of light in first, second and third spectral bands, wherein spectral properties of light received by the spectral measuring device are determined by measuring the received light with the spectral sensors, wherein the light passes through one of the filters before being sensed by a respective one of the spectral sensors.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the spectral sensing device further comprises at least a fourth broadband sensor.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the spectral sensing device comprises a plurality of sensors and filters, wherein the sensors receive light from respective filters and measure light in discrete spectral bands substantially covering a visible band of light.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein power is provided to the color measurement apparatus via the interface.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the color measurement apparatus further comprises a battery for providing power to the color measurement apparatus.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the battery is recharged via the interface.

8. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the interface comprises a USB interface.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein, in the second mode of operation, images displayed on the display of the personal computing system are controlled by a computer geographically remote to the personal computing system.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein, colors displayed by the display of the personal computing system are controlled to more closely match an item geographically remote to the personal computing system.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein, a user of the personal computing system participates in a commercial transaction involving the computer geographically remote to the personal computing system.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein, in the third mode of operation, the personal computing system is coupled to a computer geographically remote to the personal computing system.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein, the pigments of the printer coupled to the personal computing system are controlled to more closely match an item geographically remote to the personal computing system.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein, a user of the personal computing system participates in a commercial transaction involving the computer geographically remote to the personal computing system.

15. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein, in the third mode of operation, the color measurement apparatus measures optical properties of an object in proximity to the personal computing system.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein, a user of the personal computing system participates in a commercial transaction involving the computer geographically remote to the personal computing system.

17. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the spectral sensing device is calibrated by measuring light received from a calibration standard.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the calibration standard is illuminated by light emitted by the light source integral to the color measurement apparatus.

19. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the calibration standard comprises part of a mouse pad for the personal computing system.

20. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the calibration standard includes a translucent outer surface.
