Abstract

A mobile station ( 4 ) in a satellite mobile telephone system predicts when it will move into another cell on the basis of one set of broadcast information thereby reducing the overall processing burden. The mobile station ( 4 ) can predict with a useful degree of certainty which broadcast control channel (BOCH) frequencies it should listen on when it wakes up on the basis of a stored map of the relative positions of cells. The broadcast information is valid for a predetermined time interval. Upon waking up, the mobile station ( 4 ) determines present time within the predetermined time interval and uses the broadcast information as well as the present time within the predetermined time interval to predict the time at which the mobile telephone will leave the cell.

Claims (23)

1. A method of operating a satellite mobile telephone having a sleep mode to conserve power and an awake mode to receive satellite signals in a satellite mobile telephone system in which a plurality of cells move across the surface of the Earth as a satellite orbits, comprising:

receiving data indicative of relative movement of a cell-predicting when the satellite mobile telephone will leave the cell using the received data; and

the satellite mobile telephone using the prediction of when the satellite mobile telephone will leave the cell to reduce resource utilization of the satellite mobile telephone.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising initiating a cell selection operation based upon the prediction of when the satellite mobile telephone will leave the cell.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising selecting at the satellite mobile telephone a control channel to be monitored on the basis of the prediction.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining at the satellite mobile telephone the correctness of the prediction and performing a network registration process for the satellite mobile telephone in dependence on the determined correctness.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein receiving the data indicative of the relative movement of the cell is performed upon entering an awake mode of the satellite mobile telephone.

6. The method of claim 4 wherein receiving the data indicative of the relative movement of the cell comprises receiving data from the satellite.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the satellite mobile telephone receives the data from the satellite via a control channel.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the data indicative of the relative movement of the cell comprises data related to a position of a central portion of the cell and a translational vector indicating a movement of the central portion of the cell.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising causing the satellite mobile telephone to scan a predetermined subset of communication channels.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the communication channels are broadcast and control channels (BCCH).

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the data indicative of the relative movement of the cell is calculated for a plurality of predetermined periods of time covering a time range that exceeds the prediction for the time when the satellite mobile telephone will leave the cell.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein satellite mobile telephone is communicating with a selected satellite access node (SAN) via the satellite, the method further comprising receiving location data indicating a location of the satellite mobile telephone from the SAN via the satellite.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the satellite mobile telephone uses the location data in combination with the received data indicative of the relative movement of the cell to predict when the satellite mobile telephone will leave the cell.

14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising monitoring a predetermined communication channel associated with the cell if the satellite mobile telephone determines that the present time is not yet the predicted time for the mobile telephone to leave the cell.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein receiving data indicative of the relative movement of a cell comprises receiving data indicative of the movement of a cell relative to the Earth's surface.

16. The method of claim 1 wherein the satellite mobile telephone uses the prediction of when the satellite mobile telephone will leave the cell to reduce resource utilization of the satellite mobile telephone by monitoring a subset of available control channels.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the subset of available control channels includes a control channel for the current cell and a control channel for a cell adjacent to the current cell.

18. A mobile device that performs the method of claim 1 .

19. A mobile device having a sleep mode to conserve power and an awake mode to receive satellite signals for use in a satellite mobile telephone system in which a plurality of cells move across the surface of the Earth as a satellite orbits, the mobile device comprising:

a receiving means for receiving data indicative of relative movement of a cell-predicting when the satellite mobile telephone will leave the cell using the received data; and

a prediction means that uses the received data indicative of relative movement of a cell to predict when the satellite mobile telephone will leave the cell to reduce resource utilization of the satellite mobile telephone.
