Abstract

A card is provided including a plurality of layers connected together at portions thereof to form a pocket. In one embodiment the card has a first plastic substrate, a second plastic substrate, and two overlay layers. A portion of a first surface of the first plastic substrate is connected to a portion of a first surface of the second plastic substrate to define a cavity therebetween. An opening to the cavity extends from a side of the first and second substrates and provides access to the cavity. In another embodiment, one of the substrates has a generally clear portion and a generally opaque portion. The generally opaque portion is generally adjacent a perimeter of the substrate and defines a frame, and the generally clear portion is interior of the frame and defines a window.

Claims (30)

1 . A substantially planar pocket card, comprising:

a first substantially planar and generally rigid plastic substrate having a first surface and a second surface, a second substantially planar and generally rigid plastic substrate having a first surface and a second surface, a portion of the first surface of the first plastic substrate being laminated to a portion of the first surface of the second plastic substrate and defining a cavity therebetween, wherein an opening to the cavity extends from a side of the first and second substrates and provides access to the cavity; and,

a first covering secured to the second surface of the first substrate and a second covering secured to the second surface of the second substrate.

2 . The pocket card of claim 1 , further comprising a first substantially laminating-free mask on a surface of one of the first surface of the first substrate and the second substrate, the first mask extending into the opening of the card.

3 . The pocket card of claim 2 , further comprising a second substantially laminating-free mask on a surface of the other of the first surface of the first substrate and the second substrate, opposing the first mask, the second mask extending into the opening of the card.

4 . The pocket card of claim 1 , further comprising printing on at least one of the first and second surfaces of the second substrate.

5 . The pocket card of claim 1 , further comprising printing on a portion of a perimeter of one of the first substrate and the second substrate to thereby define a frame.

6 . The pocket card of claim 5 , wherein the frame is provided on the second substrate, and wherein the frame defines a window providing viewing into the cavity through the window.

7 . The pocket card of claim 1 , wherein the first plastic substrate is opaque.

8 . The pocket card of claim 1 , wherein the second plastic substrate is generally clear.

9 . The pocket card of claim 1 , wherein the first and second coverings comprise a transparent PVC film.

10 . The pocket card of claim 1 , further comprising a third substantially planar and generally rigid plastic substrate having a first surface and a second surface, the third substrate being positioned between the first substrate and the first covering, wherein a portion of the first surface of the third plastic substrate being laminated to the second surface of the first plastic substrate and defining a second cavity therebetween, wherein a second opening to the second cavity extends from a side of the first and third substrates and provides access to the second cavity, and wherein the first covering is secured to the second surface of the third substrate.

11 . The pocket card of claim 1 , further comprising a flap extending from the card, the flap capable of operating as a stand for the card.

12 . The card of claim 1 , further comprising a notch through the card adjacent the opening.

13 . The card of claim 1 , further comprising a machine readable member connected thereto.

14 . The card of claim 1 , wherein the machine readable member is a magnetic strip.

15 . A substantially planar card having a pocket, comprising:

a first generally rigid plastic substrate having a plurality of sides defining a perimeter; and,

a second generally rigid plastic substrate secured to the first substrate adjacent at least a portion of the perimeter of the first substrate, a cavity formed between a portion of opposing surfaces of the first substrate and the second substrate interior of the perimeter of the first and second substrates, and a non-secured area provided adjacent at least a portion of one of the sides of the first substrate facing the second substrate, the non-secured area forming an opening providing access to the cavity.

16 . The card of claim 15 , further comprising a flap extending transversely from the card.

17 . The card of claim 15 , wherein the first substrate has a first surface and a second surface, wherein the second substrate has a first surface and a second surface, the first surface of the first substrate opposing the first surface of the second substrate and forming the cavity, and further comprising a first clear covering secured to the second surface of the first substrate, and a second clear covering secured to the second surface of the second substrate.

18 . The card of claim 15 , wherein the second substrate is laminated to the first substrate.

19 . The card of claim 15 , further comprising a removable core positioned between the first substrate and the second substrate.

20 . The card of claim 19 , wherein the removable core has a coating of non-laminating mask on first and second surfaces thereof.

21 . The card of claim 15 , wherein the second substrate has a plurality of sides defining a perimeter, and further comprising a printing on the second substrate adjacent the sides of the second substrate to form a frame having a window therebetween.

22 . A substantially planar card having a pocket, the card comprising:

a portion of a first substrate secured to a portion of a second substrate to define a cavity between the first and second substrate and having an opening thereto, the second substrate having a generally clear portion and a generally opaque portion, the generally opaque portion being adjacent a perimeter of the second substrate and defining a frame, and the generally clear portion being interior of the frame and defining a window.

23 . The card of claim 22 , wherein a portion of a perimeter of the first substrate is laminated to a portion of the perimeter of the second substrate, and wherein the window provides visual access to the cavity of the card.

24 . The card of claim 22 , further comprising a flap extending transversely from the card, the flap comprising a portion of the first substrate.

25 . The card of claim 22 , wherein a material forming the second substrate is generally clear and has printing thereon adjacent the perimeter forming the generally opaque portion.
