Abstract

The invention provides polylactic acid (PLA) films substantially free of plasticizers and methods of manufacturing same by blown film process are provided. PLA films are environmentally degradable and have applications in, at least, packaging and labeling.

Claims (13)

1. A packaged good comprising a consumable item and a PLA blown film wrapped around at least a portion of the consumable item, in which the PLA blown film consists essentially of a polylactic acid (PLA) polymer and less than about 2 weight percent plasticizer.

2. An envelope having a front wall and a rear wall, one of said walls being provided with at least one window, in which the window comprises a blown film consisting essentially of a polylactic acid (PLA) polymer and less than about 2 weight percent plasticizer.

3. A blown film consisting essentially of a polylactic acid (PLA) polymer and less than about 2 weight percent plasticizer.

4. A blown film consisting essentially of a polylactic acid (PLA) polymer and less than about 5 weight percent of a lactide selected from the group consisting of D-lactide, L-lactide, meso D,L-lactide and racemic D,L-lactide.

5. The blown film according to claim 4 in which the weight percent of the lactide is less than about 2 percent.

6. A blown film comprising at least 90 percent a polylactic acid (PLA) polymer and less than about 2 weight percent plasticizer.

7. The blown film according to claim 6 in which the film further comprises a colorant.

8. The blown film according to claim 7 in which the colorant is present at a concentration between about 1 to about 10 percent by weight.

9. The blown film according to claim 8 in which the colorant is TiO 2 .

10. The blown film according to claim 6 comprising at least 98 percent a polylactic acid (PLA) polymer and less than about 2 weight percent plasticizer.

11. The blown film according to claim 10 comprising at least 99 percent a polylactic acid (PLA) polymer and less than about 1 weight percent plasticizer.

12. A packaged good comprising a consumable item and a PLA blown film wrapped around at least a portion of the consumable item, in which the PLA blown film comprises at least 90 percent a polylactic acid (PLA) polymer and less than about 2 weight percent plasticizer.

13. An envelope having a front wall and a rear wall, one of said walls being provided with at least one window, in which the window comprises a blown film comprising at least 90 percent a polylactic acid (PLA) polymer and less than about 2 weight percent plasticizer.
