Abstract

A method for coating a cutting implement. The coating has titanium chromium nitride and provides the cutting blades with a satin silver appearance. In some embodiments, the titanium chromium nitride coating has a thickness in a range between about 0.3 microns and 0.5 microns, a surface roughness in a range of about 15 to 25×10 −6 inch/inch, and a hardness in a range of about 5.7 to about 9.1 gigapascals.

Claims (33)

1 . A method for coating a cutting implement, the process comprising:

placing a cutting implement within a coating chamber;

cleaning the cutting implement; and

depositing a coating on the cutting implement, wherein the coating has a range of about 25 to 50 percent by weight titanium nitride and a range of about 50 to 75 percent by weight chromium nitride.

2 . The method of claim 2 wherein the coating is deposited by a process selected from a group consisting of reactive magnetron sputtering, cathode arc plasma process, chemical vapor deposition, physical vapor deposition, thermal spraying, or sintering after a dip coating.

3 . The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of evacuating the chamber prior to cleaning.

4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of introducing to the chamber a sputtering gas mixture comprising argon and nitrogen.

5 . The method of claim 1 wherein the cutting implement is a complementary blade device.

6 . The method of claim 1 wherein the cutting implement is a pair of scissors.

7 . The method of claim 6 wherein the cutting implement is a rotary style paper trimmer.

8 . A method for coating a cutting implement, the process comprising:

placing a cutting implement within a coating chamber;

cleaning the cutting implement;

selecting a sputtering current; and

depositing a coating on the cutting implement, wherein the coating has about 35% by weight of titanium nitride and about 65% by weight of chromium nitride

9 . The method of claim 8 wherein said sputtering current is in the range of 0.5 to 0.7 amperes.

10 . The method of claim 8 further comprising the step of evacuating the chamber prior to cleaning.

11 . The method of claim 8 wherein the coating is deposited by a process selected from a group comprising reactive magnetron sputtering and cathode arc plasma processes.

12 . The method of claim 8 wherein the cutting implement is a complementary blade device.

13 . The method of claim 8 wherein the cutting implement is a pair of scissors.

14 . The method of claim 8 wherein the cutting implement is a rotary style paper trimmer.

15 . A method for coating a cutting implement, the process comprising:

placing at least one cutting blade within a coating chamber;

evacuating the chamber to a predetermined pressure;

cleaning the blade within the chamber;

introducing to the chamber a sputtering gas mixture containing argon and nitrogen;

selecting a sputtering current in the range of 0.5 to 0.7 amperes; and

depositing a coating on the blade, wherein the coating has about 35% by weight of titanium nitride and about 65% by weight of chromium nitride and provides the cutting blade with a satin silver appearance.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the coating is deposited by a process selected from a group comprising cathode arc plasma and reactive magnetron sputtering.

17 . The method of claim 15 further comprising the step of evacuating the chamber prior to cleaning.

18 . The method of claim 15 wherein the cutting implement is a complementary blade device.

19 . The method of claim 15 wherein the cutting implement is a pair of scissors.

20 . The method of claim 15 wherein the cutting implement is a rotary style paper trimmer.
