Abstract

Documents to be accessed over a computer network are stored in network data storage such that each document is associated with a document archive and a task is associated with each stored document. An escalation list is created for each task and is associated with the document archive so as to specify an ordered list of escalation items to be satisfied until fulfillment of the task. When a parameter associated with each escalation list item has been satisfied, process operations associated with the next escalation list item are performed. Fulfillment of the task results in appending a verification of task fulfillment to the document archive.

Claims (75)

1. A method of processing documents accessed over a computer network, the method comprising:

storing one or more documents in a network data storage, wherein each document of the documents is associated with a document archive;

specifying a task to be performed that is associated with each stored document, wherein the task is selected from a group consisting of reading a report, reviewing a study, examining an image, ordering a test, and initiating a procedure;

creating an escalation tree that is associated with the document archive and that specifies ordered levels of notifications to be pursued until fulfillment of the task, wherein each escalation tree level is attempted in order to receive confirmation that the task has been fulfilled;

determining whether a parameter associated with a current escalation tree level has been satisfied;

performing process operations associated with a next escalation tree level if the parameter associated with the current escalation tree level has been satisfied;

determining whether the task is fulfilled;

halting the determining and performing process operations if the task is determined to be fulfilled; and

appending a verification of task fulfillment to the document archive,

wherein the task is determined to be fulfilled when a predetermined network event has occurred,

wherein the predetermined network event comprises a change to at least one parameter in the document archive,

wherein the change to at least one parameter identifies the fulfilled task and a person responsible for fulfilling the task and a date and time of fulfillment, and

wherein a last process operation associated with the escalation tree is a request for human intervention that requires a physical acknowledgment action by a human operator to be deemed fulfilled.

2. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the predetermined network event comprises receipt of a network verification message.

3. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the escalation list includes contact data for each escalation tree level.

4. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the stored document can be any one of a plurality of document formats.

5. A method as defined in claim 4 , wherein the document formats include image data.

6. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the document archive includes a plurality of hierarchy fields that characterize document content, and the hierarchy fields include Patient, Study, Series, Image, and Instance identification fields.

7. A computer processing system that processes documents accessed over a computer network, the system comprising:

a memory;

a network communications interface that permits communications between the computer processing system and the network; and

a document processor coupled to the network communication interface, wherein the document processor is configured with software instructions to perform steps comprising:

storing one or more documents in a network data storage, wherein each document of the documents is associated with a document archive;

specifying a task to be performed that is associated with each stored document, wherein the task is selected from a group consisting of reading a report, reviewing a study, examining an image, ordering a test, and initiating a procedure;

creating an escalation tree that is associated with the document archive and that specifies ordered levels of notifications to be pursued until fulfillment of the task, wherein each escalation tree level is attempted in order to receive confirmation that the task has been fulfilled;

determining whether a parameter associated with a current escalation tree level has been satisfied;

performing process operations associated with a next escalation tree level if the parameter associated with the current escalation tree level has been satisfied;

determining whether the task is fulfilled;

halting the determining and performing process operations if the task is determined to be fulfilled; and

appending a verification of task fulfillment to the document archive,

wherein the document processor is configured with software instructions to perform further steps comprising:

determining that the task is fulfilled when a predetermined network event has occurred

wherein the predetermined network event comprises a change to at least one parameter in the document archive,

wherein the change to at least one parameter identifies the fulfilled task and a person responsible for fulfilling the task and a date and time of fulfillment, and

wherein a last process operation associated with the escalation tree is a request for human intervention that requires a physical acknowledgment action by a human operator to be deemed fulfilled.

8. The system as defined in claim 7 , wherein the predetermined network event comprises receipt of a network verification message.

9. A system as defined in claim 7 , wherein the escalation tree includes contact data for each escalation tree level.

10. A system as defined in claim 7 , wherein the stored document can be any one of a plurality of document formats.

11. A system as defined in claim 10 , wherein the document formats include image data.

12. A system as defined in claim 7 , wherein the document archive includes a plurality of hierarchy fields that characterize document content, and the hierarchy fields include Patient, Study, Series, Image, and Instance identification fields.

13. A computer processing system that processes documents accessed over a computer network, the system comprising:

a processor; a memory;

means for storing one or more documents in a network data storage, wherein each document of the documents is associated with a document archive;

means for specifying a task to be performed that is associated with each stored document, wherein the task is selected from a group consisting of reading a report, reviewing a study, examining an image, ordering a test, and initiating a procedure;

means for creating an escalation tree that is associated with the document archive and that specifies ordered levels of notifications to be pursued until fulfillment of the task, wherein each escalation tree level is attempted in order to receive confirmation that the task has been fulfilled;

means for determining whether a parameter associated with a current escalation tree level has been satisfied;

means for performing process operations associated with a next escalation tree level if the parameter associated with the current escalation tree level has been satisfied;

means for determining whether the task is fulfilled;

means for halting the determining and performing process operations if the task is determined to be fulfilled; and

means for appending a verification of task fulfillment to the document archive,

wherein the task is determined to be fulfilled when a predetermined network event has occurred,

wherein the predetermined network event comprises a change to at least one parameter in the document archive,

wherein the change to at least one parameter identifies the fulfilled task and a person responsible for fulfilling the task and a date and time of fulfillment, and

wherein a last process operation associated with the escalation tree is a request for human intervention that requires a physical acknowledgment action by a human operator to be deemed fulfilled.

14. A system as defined in claim 13 , wherein the predetermined network event comprises receipt of a network verification message.

15. A system as defined in claim 13 , wherein the escalation tree includes contact data for each escalation tree level.

16. A system as defined in claim 13 , wherein the document archive includes a plurality of hierarchy fields that characterize document content, and the hierarchy fields include Patient, Study, Series, Image, and Instance identification fields.

17. A computer-readable storage medium having instructions stored thereon that, when read by a computer, cause the computer to perform operations for processing documents accessed over a computer network, the operations comprising:

storing one or more documents in a network data storage, wherein each document of the documents is associated with a document archive;

specifying a task to be performed that is associated with each stored document, wherein the task is selected from a group consisting of reading a report, reviewing a study, examining an image, ordering a test, and initiating a procedure;

creating an escalation tree that is associated with the document archive and that specifies ordered levels of notifications to be pursued until fulfillment of the task, wherein each escalation tree level is attempted in order to receive confirmation that the task has been fulfilled;

determining whether a parameter associated with a current escalation tree level has been satisfied;

performing process operations associated with a next escalation tree level if the parameter associated with the current escalation tree level has been satisfied;

determining whether the task is fulfilled;

halting the determining and performing process operations if the task is determined to be fulfilled; and

appending a verification of task fulfillment to the document archive,

wherein the task is determined to be fulfilled when a predetermined network event has occurred,

wherein the predetermined network event comprises a change to at least one parameter in the document archive,

wherein the change to at least one parameter identifies the fulfilled task and a person responsible for fulfilling the task and a date and time of fulfillment, and

wherein a last process operation associated with the escalation tree is a request for human intervention that requires a physical acknowledgment action by a human operator to be deemed fulfilled.

18. The computer-readable storage medium as defined in claim 17 , wherein the predetermined network event comprises receipt of a network verification message.

19. The computer-readable storage medium as defined in claim 17 , wherein the escalation list includes contact data for each escalation tree level.

20. The computer-readable storage medium as defined in claim 17 , wherein the stored document can be any one of a plurality of document formats.

21. The computer-readable storage medium as defined in claim 20 , wherein the document formats include image data.

22. The computer-readable storage medium as defined in claim 17 , wherein the document archive includes a plurality of hierarchy fields that characterize document content, and the hierarchy fields include Patient, Study, Series, Image, and Instance identification fields.
