Abstract

The present invention concerns electrode materials capable of redox reactions by electrons and alkaline ions exchange with an electrolyte. The applications are in the field of primary (batteries) or secondary electrochemical generators, super capacitors and light modulating system of the super capacitor type.

Claims (88)

1. An electrochemical cell wherein at least one electrode comprises at least one electrode material comprising a complex oxide corresponding to the general formula A a M m Z z O o N n F f wherein:

A comprises an alkaline metal;

M comprises at least one transition metal, and optionally at least one a non-transition metal, or mixtures thereof;

Z comprises at least one non-metal;

O is oxygen;

N nitrogen; and

F is fluorine; and

the coefficients a, m, o, n f≧0 and z≧0 are selected to ensure electroneutrality;

wherein said complex oxide is selected from the group consisting of sulfates, phosphates, fluorophosphates, silicates, oxysulfates, oxyphosphates, oxysilicates, and mixtures thereof;

wherein said oxide comprises a non powdery deposit of a conductive carbonaceous material on a surface thereof to obtain a substantially regular electric field distribution on the surface of material particles of said complex oxide;

wherein said coefficients are selected to avoid oxidation of the conductive carbonaceous material during deposition thereof on said surface; and

wherein the complex oxide is LiFePO 4 .

2. An electrochemical cell according to claim 1 , wherein the carbon coated LiFePO 4 particles have an average particle size of 120 nm.

3. An electrochemical cell according to claim 2 , wherein the electrode material allows insertion and deinsertion of lithium ions within 30 seconds.

4. An electrochemical cell according to claim 1 , wherein the complex oxide LiFePO 4 is the cathode material and the anode comprises Li 4+x−2y Mg y Ti 5 O 12 (0≦x, y≦1).

5. An electrochemical cell according to claim 4 , wherein the collector of the cathode and the collector of the anode are made of aluminium.

6. An electrochemical cell according to claim 5 , wherein the carbonaceous material is a solid polymer comprising from 60% to 100% molar carbon, and having an electronic conductivity higher than 10 −6 S/cm at room temperature.

7. An electrochemical cell according to claim 1 , which is a primary or a secondary battery, wherein the electrolyte is a polymer, solvating or not, optionally plasticized or gelled by a polar liquid comprising having one or more metallic salts dissolved therein.

8. An electrochemical cell according to claim 7 , wherein one of the metallic salts is a lithium salt.

9. An electrochemical cell according to claim 1 , wherein the electrode material further comprises an electronic conducting agent.

10. An electrochemical cell according to claim 9 , wherein the electronic conducting agent is carbon black or carbon fiber.

11. An electrochemical cell according to claim 10 , wherein the amount of carbon black or carbon fiber is 0.5-10% by volume.

12. An electrochemical cell according to claim 1 , wherein the final mass concentration of carbonaceous material is between 0.2 and 15%.

13. An electrochemical cell according to claim 1 , wherein the carbonaceous material is a solid polymer comprising from 60% to 100% molar carbon, and having an electronic conductivity higher than 10 −6 S/cm at room temperature.

14. An electrochemical cell wherein at least one electrode comprises at least one electrode material comprising a complex oxide corresponding to the general formula A a M m Z z O o N n F f wherein:

A comprises an alkaline metal;

M comprises at least one transition metal, and optionally at least one a non-transition metal, or mixtures thereof;

Z comprises at least one non-metal;

O is oxygen;

N nitrogen; and

F is fluorine; and

the coefficients a, m, o, n f≧0 and z≧0 are selected to ensure electroneutrality,

wherein said complex oxide is selected from the group consisting of sulfates, phosphates, fluorophosphates, silicates, oxysulfates, oxyphosphates, oxysilicates, and mixtures thereof;

wherein said oxide comprises a non powdery deposit of a conductive carbonaceous material on a surface thereof to obtain a substantially regular electric field distribution on the surface of material particles of said complex oxide;

wherein said coefficients are selected to avoid oxidation of the conductive carbonaceous material during deposition thereof on said surface;

wherein the complex oxide is Li 1+x MP 1−x Si x O 4 , where M comprises Fe or Mn, 0≦x, is the cathode material and the anode comprises Li 4+x−2y Mg y Ti 5 O 12 (0≦x, y≦1).

15. An electrochemical cell according to claim 14 , wherein the non-transition metal is magnesium or aluminium.

16. An electrochemical cell according to claim 14 , wherein the Mg and/or Al content is from 1 to 25%.

17. An electrochemical cell according to claim 14 , which is a primary or a secondary battery, wherein the electrolyte is a polymer, solvating or not, optionally plasticized or gelled by a polar liquid comprising having one or more metallic salts dissolved therein.

18. An electrochemical cell according to claim 17 , wherein one of the metallic salts is a lithium salt.

19. An electrochemical cell according to claim 14 , wherein the electrode material further comprises an electronic conducting agent.

20. An electrochemical cell according to claim 19 , wherein the electronic conducting agent is carbon black or carbon fiber.

21. An electrochemical cell according to claim 20 , wherein the amount of carbon black or carbon fiber is 0.5-10% by volume.

22. An electrochemical cell according to claim 14 , wherein the final mass concentration of carbonaceous material is between 0.2 and 15%.

23. An electrochemical cell wherein at least one electrode comprises at least one electrode material comprising a complex oxide corresponding to the general formula A a M m Z z O o N n F f wherein:

A comprises an alkaline metal;

M comprises at least one transition metal, and optionally at least one a non-transition metal, or mixtures thereof;

Z compnses at least one non-metal;

O is oxygen;

N nitrogen; and

F is fluorine; and

the coefficients a, m, o, n f≦0 and z≦0 are selected to ensure electroneutrality,

wherein said complex oxide is selected from the group consisting of sulfates, phosphates, fluorophosphates, silicates, oxysulfates, oxyphosphates, oxysilicates, and mixtures thereof;

wherein said oxide comprises a non powdery deposit of a conductive carbonaceous material on a surface thereof to obtain a substantially regular electric field distribution on the surface of material particles of said complex oxide;

wherein said coefficients are selected to avoid oxidation of the conductive carbonaceous material during deposition thereof on said surface;

wherein the complex oxide is LiFePO 4 ;

wherein the carbon coated LiFePO 4 particles have a particle size of 120 nm; and

wherein the collector of the cathode and the collector of the anode are made of aluminium.

24. An electrochemical cell according to claim 23 , wherein the non-transition metal is magnesium or aluminium.

25. An electrochemical cell according to claim 24 , wherein the Mg and/or Al content is from 1 to 25%.

26. An electrochemical cell according to claim 23 , which is a primary or a secondary battery, wherein the electrolyte is a polymer, solvating or not, optionally plasticized or gelled by a polar liquid comprising having one or more metallic salts dissolved therein.

27. An electrochemical cell according to claim 26 , wherein one of the metallic salts is a lithium salt.

28. An electrochemical cell according to claim 23 , wherein the electrode material further comprises an electronic conducting agent.

29. An electrochemical cell according to claim 28 , wherein the electronic conducting agent is carbon black or carbon fiber.

30. An electrochemical cell according to claim 29 , wherein the amount of carbon black or carbon fiber is 0.5-10% by volume.

31. An electrochemical cell according to claim 23 , wherein the final mass concentration of carbonaceous material is between 0.2 and 15%.

32. An electrochemical cell according to claim 23 , wherein the carbonaceous material is a solid polymer comprising from 60% to 100% molar carbon, and having an electronic conductivity higher than 10 −6 S/cm at room temperature.

33. An electrochemical cell wherein at least one electrode comprises at least one electrode material comprising a complex oxide corresponding to the general formula A a M m Z z O o N n F f wherein

A comprises an alkaline metal;

M comprises at least one transition metal, and optionally at least one a non-transition metal, or mixtures thereof;

Z comprises at least one non-metal;

is oxygen;

N nitrogen; and

F is fluorine; and

the coefficients a, m, o, n f≧0 and z≧0 are selected to ensure electroneutrality,

wherein said complex oxide is selected from the group consisting of sulfates, phosphates, fluorophosphates, silicates, oxysulfates, oxyphosphates, oxysilicates, and mixtures thereof;

wherein said oxide comprises a non powdery deposit of a conductive carbonaceous material on a surface thereof to obtain a substantially regular electric field distribution on the surface of material particles of said complex oxide;

wherein said coefficients are selected to avoid oxidation of the conductive carbonaceous material during deposition thereof on said surface; and

wherein the complex oxide is of the general formula Li 1+x MP 1−x Si x O 4 or Li 1−x−y MP 1−x Si x O 4−y F y wherein 0≦x, y≦1 and M comprises Fe or Mn, or the complex oxide is of general formula Li 3−x+z M 2 (P 1−x−z S x Si z O 4 ) 3 wherein M comprises Fe or Mn, 0≦x and z≦1.

34. An electrochemical cell according to claim 33 , wherein the non-transition metal is magnesium or aluminium.

35. An electrochemical cell according to claim 34 , wherein the Mg and/or Al content is from 1 to 25%.

36. An electrochemical cell according to claim 35 , which is a primary or a secondary battery, wherein the electrolyte is a polymer, solvating or not, optionally plasticized or gelled by a polar liquid comprising having one or more metallic salts dissolved therein.

37. An electrochemical cell according to claim 36 , wherein one of the metallic salts is a lithium salt.

38. An electrochemical cell according to claim 33 , wherein the electrode material further comprises an electronic conducting agent.

39. An electrochemical cell according to claim 38 , wherein the electronic conducting agent is carbon black or carbon fiber.

40. An electrochemical cell according to claim 39 , wherein the amount of carbon black or carbon fiber is 0.5-10% by volume.

41. An electrochemical cell according to claim 33 , wherein the final mass concentration of carbonaceous material is between 0.2 and 15%.

42. An electrochemical cell according to claim 33 , wherein the carbonaceous material is a solid polymer comprising from 60% to 100% molar carbon, and having an electronic conductivity higher than 10 −6 S/cm at room temperature.
