Abstract

The subject invention provides novel peptides for use in treating mammals to control appetite and obesity. Disclosed is a peptide derivative having the formula: X 1 -Z-Q-arg-trp-NH 2 wherein: X 1 is an acyl group, Z is amino-2-naphthyl-carboxylic acid or histidine, Q is (D)phenylalanine or p-iodo-(D)phenylalanine, or a pharmacologically acceptable salt, complex or derivative thereof, the peptide derivative having melanocortin-4 receptor agonist activity.

Claims (11)

1. A peptide derivative having the formula: X 1 -Z-Q-arg-trp-NH 2 wherein: X 1 is acetyl, Z is amino-2-naphthyl-carboxylic acid or histidine, Q is p-iodo-(D)phenylalanine; or a pharmacologically acceptable salt or complex thereof, said peptide derivative having melanocortin-4 receptor agonist activity.

2. The peptide derivative according to claim 1 wherein Z is histidine.

3. A composition for the treatment of obesity, hypertension, type II diabetes, or the control of appetite in a mammal comprising an effective amount of a peptide derivative of claim 1 in combination with a carrier therefore.

4. A method for the treatment of obesity, hypertension, type II diabetes, or control of appetite comprising administering to a mammal in need thereof an effective amount of a peptide derivative according to claim 1 .

5. A peptide derivative having the formula:

X 1 -Z-Q-arg-trp-NH 2

wherein: X 1 is acetyl, Z is amino-2-naphthyl-carboxylic acid, Q is (D)phenylalanine or p-iodo-(D)phenylalanine; or a pharmacologically acceptable salt or complex thereof, said peptide derivative having melanocortin-4 receptor agonist activity.

6. The peptide derivative according to claim 5 wherein Q is (D)phenylalanine.

7. The peptide derivative according to claim 5 wherein Q is p-iodo-(D)phenylalanine.

8. A composition for the treatment of obesity, hypertension, type II diabetes, or the control of appetite in a mammal comprising an effective amount of a peptide derivative of claim 5 in combination with a carrier therefore.

9. A method for the treatment of obesity, hypertension, type II diabetes, or control of appetite comprising administering to a mammal in need thereof an effective amount of a peptide derivative according to claim 5 .
