Abstract

A hydrogel marker is placed under stress during its curing stage, in one embodiment, by application of an externally applied force. The stress may also be induced during or after the dehydration process. The direction of the externally applied force increases the length, width, depth, or radial extent of the marker. The elastic limit of the marker is exceeded when the external force is applied so that the marker substantially retains its stressed size and shape when the externally applied force is removed. When the stretched or otherwise deformed dehydrated marker is hydrated, it substantially returns to the configuration it had prior to its dehydration and prior to the application of the externally applied force.

Claims (16)

1. A method for facilitating ultrasound viewing of a hyperechoic material disposed within tissue at a biopsy site, comprising:

providing a hyperechoic metallic material as said hyperechoic material;

selecting, based on a corresponding known radial expansion/longitudinal contraction ratio, a dehydrated hyperechoic hydrogel material for said biopsy site, wherein the radial expansion/longitudinal contraction ratio represents how the dehydrated hyperechoic hydrogel material radially expands and longitudinally contracts when hydrated;

embedding said hyperechoic metallic material within said dehydrated hyperechoic hydrogel material, wherein said dehydrated hyperechoic hydrogel material is larger than the hyperechoic metallic material so that the dehydrated hyperechoic hydrogel material surrounds the hyperechoic metallic material, and wherein the dehydrated hyperechoic hydrogel material is in a dehydrated state;

inserting the dehydrated hyperechoic hydrogel material having said hyperechoic metallic material embedded therein into the tissue at the biopsy site within a patient's body so that natural moisture of the body hydrates said dehydrated hyperechoic hydrogel material, wherein said dehydrated hyperechoic hydrogel material changes into hypoechoic water and expands and contracts in a controlled manner according to said radial expansion/longitudinal contraction ratio when said dehydrated hyperechoic hydrogel material is fully hydrated,

said hyperechoic metallic material being surrounded by a hydrated hypoechoic hydrogel material that is about eighty to ninety percent water after said natural moisture of the body has hydrated said dehydrated hyperechoic hydrogel material;

using ultrasound imaging to image said hyperechoic metallic material surrounded by said hydrated hypoechoic hydrogel material,

wherein said hyperechoic metallic material and said hydrated hypoechoic hydrogel material contrast with one another, said hyperechoic metallic material being light and said hydrated hypoechoic hydrogel material being dark when viewed under said ultrasound imaging by a human observer,

said contrast enabling location of said hyperechoic metallic material as well as its shape and size when said biopsy site is viewed under said ultrasound imaging by said human observer; and

leaving said hyperechoic metallic material and said hydrated hypoechoic hydrogel material in said patient's body to facilitate location by said ultrasound imaging of said hyperechoic metallic material at a future time.

2. A method for facilitating ultrasound viewing of a hyperechoic metallic material disposed within tissue of a patient's body at a biopsy site, comprising:

selecting, based on a corresponding known radial expansion/longitudinal contraction ratio, a dehydrated hyperechoic hydrogel material for said biopsy site, wherein the radial expansion/longitudinal contraction ratio represents how the dehydrated hyperechoic hydrogel material radially expands and longitudinally contracts when hydrated;

positioning the dehydrated hyperechoic hydrogel material in said tissue of the patient's body at the biopsy site adjacent a hyperechoic metallic material so that the hyperechoic metallic material is near the dehydrated hyperechoic hydrogel material, said dehydrated hyperechoic hydrogel material identifying a location of the hyperechoic metallic material when said biopsy site is viewed by a human observer after the dehydrated hyperechoic hydrogel material is hydrated by natural moisture in said tissue and expands and contracts in a controlled manner according to said radial expansion/longitudinal contraction ratio, thereby becoming a hydrated hypoechoic hydrogel material, the hydrated hypoechoic hydrogel material being visible by said human observer under ultrasound imaging,

wherein said hyperechoic metallic material and said hydrated hypoechoic hydrogel material contrast with one another when viewed by said human observer under ultrasound imaging, said hyperechoic metallic material being light and said hydrated hypoechoic hydrogel material being dark when viewed by said human observer,

said contrast enabling location of said hyperechoic metallic material as well as its shape and size when viewed by said human observer; and

leaving said hyperechoic metallic material and said hydrated hypoechoic hydrogel material in said patient's body to facilitate location of said hyperechoic metallic material by ultrasound imaging at a future time.
