Abstract

The present invention relates to an aircraft, missile, projectile, or underwater vehicle with an improved control system and an improved control system for maneuvering an aircraft, missile, projectile, or underwater vehicle. More particularly, the present invention relates to an aircraft, missile, underwater vehicle or projectile with removable control surfaces. The technical advantage of the removable control surface system (or “removable control surface”) over other systems is that the removable control surface system enables the aircraft, missile, underwater vehicle or projectile to have two or more design configurations, each configuration being tailored to the aircraft, missile, projectile, or underwater vehicle's specific stability or maneuverability requirements during a specific portion of the flight.

Claims (31)

1. An aircraft, missile, underwater vehicle or projectile comprising

a body,

a sensor or device for detecting a change in condition requiring increased maneuverability or increased stability, the sensor or device having output, and

at least one control surface,

wherein the at least one control surface is reduced or eliminated to increase maneuverability or increase stability by removing at least part of the at least one control surface and a portion of at least one control surface remains after the at least one control surface is reduced or eliminated.

2. The aircraft, missile, underwater vehicle or projectile in claim 1 , wherein the at least one control surface is a wing.

3. The aircraft, missile, underwater vehicle or projectile in claim 1 , wherein the at least one control surface is a canard.

4. The aircraft, missile, underwater vehicle or projectile in claim 1 , wherein the at least one control surface is a tail fin.

5. The aircraft, missile, underwater vehicle or projectile in claim 1 , wherein the at least one control surface is an aileron.

6. The aircraft, missile, underwater vehicle or projectile in claim 1 , wherein the at least one control surface is a vertical stabilizer.

7. The aircraft, missile, underwater vehicle or projectile in claim 1 , further comprising a closed-loop control system wherein the closed-loop control system actuates the reduction or elimination of the at least one control surface based in part on the output of the at least one sensor.

8. An aircraft, missile, underwater vehicle or projectile comprising:

a body;

at least one control surface; and

at least one sensor or device used for detecting a change in condition requiring increased maneuverability, the sensor or device having an output;

wherein the at least one control surface is reduced or eliminated by removing at least part of the at least one control surface; based in part upon the output from the at least one sensor or device of a change in condition requiring increased maneuverability and a portion of at least one control surface remains after the at least one control surface is reduced or eliminated.

9. The aircraft, missile, underwater vehicle or projectile in claim 8 , wherein part of the at least one control surface is removed by exploding a releasable connector which connects the part of the at least one control surface to the rest of the control surface.

10. The aircraft, missile, underwater vehicle or projectile in claim 9 , wherein part of the at least one control surface is removed by exploding a bolt which connects the part of the at least one control surface to the rest of the control surface.

11. The aircraft, missile, underwater vehicle or projectile in claim 8 , wherein part of the at least one control surface is removed by removing a hinge which connects the part of the at least one control surface to the rest of the control surface.

12. The aircraft, missile, underwater vehicle or projectile in claim 8 , wherein part of the at least one control surface is removed by releasing a clamp which holds the part of the at least one control surface to the rest of the control surface.

13. The aircraft, missile, underwater vehicle or projectile with a body in claim 8 , wherein part of the at least one control surface is removed by fracturing a mechanical weakness which separates the part of the at least one control surface from the rest of the control surface.

14. A missile comprising

a body,

a sensor or device for detecting a change in condition requiring increased maneuverability or increased stability, the sensor or device having an output and

at least one control surface

wherein the shape of the at least one control surface is reconfigurable to increase maneuverability or increase stability in flight.

15. A missile in claim 14 , wherein part of the at least one control surface is removed by exploding a releasable connector which connects the part of the at least one control surface to the rest of the control surface.

16. A missile in claim 14 , wherein the shape of the at least one control surface is reconfigurable in flight based in part on the output of at least one sensor or device.

17. A missile in claim 14 , wherein part of the at least one control surface is removed by releasing a clamp which holds the part of the at least one control surface to the rest of the control surface.

18. A missile in claim 14 , further comprising a closed-loop control system wherein the closed-loop control system actuates the change in shape of the at least one control surface based in part on the output of the at least one sensor or device.

19. A missile in claim 14 wherein part of the at least one control surface is removed by fracturing mechanical weakness which separates the part of the at least one control surface from the rest of the control surface.
