Abstract

Impairments in memory consolidation are treated with an amphetamine compound. In one embodiment, the method includes administering an l-amphetamine compound. In another embodiment, the method includes administering an l-methamphetamine compound. The method can include determining memory consolidation before, during and/or after administering the amphetamine compound.

Claims (38)

1. A method of improving memory consolidation in a human, comprising the step of administering a composition that includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of l-amphetamine and l-methamphetamine to a human having an impairment in memory consolidation, wherein the l-amphetamine is at least 60 mole percent l-amphetamine relative to the total l-amphetamine and l-methamphetamine components of the composition or wherein the l-methamphetamine is at least 85 mole percent l-methamphetamine relative to the total l-methamphetamine and l-amphetamine components of the composition.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein l-amphetamine is administered to the human.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein l-methamphetamine is administered to the human.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the impairment in memory consolidation in the human is determined by a Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is administered in a single dose.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the single dose is a dose of at least about a 0.01 mg dose.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is administered in multiple doses.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein each dose of the multiple doses is administered at a dose of at least about a 0.01 mg dose.

9. A method of improving memory consolidation in a human, comprising the step of administering a composition that includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of l-amphetamine and l-methamphetamine to a human having an impairment in memory consolidation, wherein the l-amphetamine is at least about 80 mole percent l-amphetamine relative to the total l-amphetamine and l-methamphetamine components of the composition or wherein the l-methamphetamine is at least 90 mole percent l-methamphetamine relative to the total l-methamphetamine and l-amphetamine components of the composition.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the impairment in memory consolidation in the human is determined by a Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the composition is administered as a single dose.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the single dose is a dose of at least about a 0.01 mg dose.

13. The method of claim 9 , wherein the composition is administered in multiple doses.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein each dose of the multiple doses is administered at a dose of at least about a 0.01 mg dose.

15. A method of improving memory consolidation in a human, comprising the step of administering a composition that includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of l-amphetamine and l-methamphetamine to a human having an impairment in memory consolidation, wherein the l-amphetamine is at least about 90 mole percent l-amphetamine relative to the total l-amphetamine and l-methamphetamine components of the composition or wherein the l-methamphetamine is at least 90 mole percent l-methamphetamine relative to the total l-methamphetamine and l-amphetamine components of the composition.

16. A method of improving memory consolidation in a human, comprising the steps of:

a) assessing the degree of an impairment in memory consolidation in a human;

b) administering a composition that includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of l-amphetamine and l-methamphetamine to the human, wherein the l-amphetamine is at least 60 mole percent l-amphetamine relative to the total l-amphetamine and l-methamphetamine components of the composition or wherein the l-methamphetamine is at least 85 mole percent l-methamphetamine relative to the total l-methamphetamine and l-amphetamine components of the composition; and

c) determining the improvement in memory consolidation after administering the composition to the human.

17. The method of claim 16 , further including the step of comparing the impairment in memory consolidation in the human before administering the composition to the improvement in memory consolidation in the human after administering the composition.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein memory consolidation is assessed and determined by a Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein the composition is administered in a dose of at least about a 0.01 mg dose.

20. The method of claim 16 , wherein the l-amphetamine is at least about 80 mole percent l-amphetamine relative to the total l-amphetamine and l-methamphetamine components of the composition.

21. The method of claim 16 , wherein the l-methamphetamine is at least about 90 mole percent l-methamphetamine relative to the total l-methamphetamine and l-amphetamine components of the composition.

22. The method of claim 16 , wherein the composition is administered in a single dose.

23. The method of claim 16 , wherein the composition is administered in multiple doses.

24. The method of claim 1 , wherein the human has an impairment in memory consolidation associated with a condition of at least one member selected from the group consisting of multiple sclerosis and stroke.

25. The method of claim 9 , wherein the human has an impairment in memory consolidation associated with a condition of at least one member selected from the group consisting of multiple sclerosis and stroke.

26. The method of claim 15 , wherein the human has an impairment in memory consolidation associated with a condition of at least one member selected from the group consisting of multiple sclerosis and stroke.

27. The method of claim 16 , wherein the human has an impairment in memory consolidation associated with a condition of at least one member selected from the group consisting of multiple sclerosis and stroke.

28. The method of claim 2 , further including administering l-methamphetamine to the human.

29. The method of claim 3 , further including administering l-amphetamine to the human.

30. The method of claim 9 , wherein l-amphetamine is administered to the human.

31. The method of claim 9 , wherein l-methamphetamine is administered to the human.

32. The method of claim 15 , wherein l-amphetamine is administered to the human.

33. The method of claim 15 , wherein l-methamphetamine is administered to the human.

34. The method of claim 16 , wherein l-amphetamine is administered to the human.

35. The method of claim 16 , wherein l-methamphetamine is administered to the human.
