Abstract

A method of making a compound of Formula I′ comprises reacting a compound of the formula DLCHO, with a compound of the formula to produce the compound of Formula I′. Methods of using the compounds are also described, particularly as intermediates for the synthesis of porphyrin rods, which porphyrin rods are in turn useful for (among other things) the production of molecular memory devices.

Claims (67)

1. A compound selected from the group consisting of:

(a) compounds of the formula A-L-D, wherein A is a 1,9-bis(thio)dipyrrin, L is p-phenylene or a covalent bond, and D is a 1,9-diacyldipyrromethane; and

(b) compounds of the formula A′-L-B, wherein A is a 1,9-bis(thio)dipyrromethane, L is p-phenylene or a covalent bond, and B is a dipyrromethane-1,9-dicarbinol; and

(c) compounds of the formula C-L-D, wherein C is a dipyrromethane, L is p-phenylene or a covalent bond, and D is a 1,9-diacyldipyrromethane.

2. The compound of claim 1 , wherein:

said compound has the formula A′-L-B;

A′ is a group of the formula:

wherein R 1 , R 2 , and R 3 are each independently selected from the group consisting of H, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkylalkyl, cycloalkylalkenyl, cycloalkylalkynyl, heterocyclo, heterocycloalkyl, heterocycloalkenyl, heterocycloalkynyl, aryl, aryloxy, arylalkyl, arylalkenyl, arylalkynyl, heteroaryl, heteroarylalkyl, heteroarylalkenyl, heteroarylalkynyl, alkoxy, halo, mercapto, azido, cyano, acyl, formyl, carboxylic acid, acylamino, ester, amide, hydroxyl, nitro, alkylthio, amino, alkylamino, arylalkylamino, disubstituted amino, acyloxy, sulfoxyl, sulfonyl, sulfonate, sulfonic acid, sulfonamide, urea, alkoxylacylamino, aminoacyloxy, p-phenylene groups, surface attachment groups, bioconjugatable groups, targeting groups, and water soluble groups; and

B is a group of the formula:

wherein R 4 , R 5 , and R 6 are each independently selected from the group consisting of H, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkylalkyl, cycloalkylalkenyl, cycloalkylalkynyl, heterocyclo, heterocycloalkyl, heterocycloalkenyl, heterocycloalkynyl, aryl, aryloxy, arylalkyl, arylalkenyl, arylalkynyl, heteroaryl, heteroarylalkyl, heteroarylalkenyl, heteroarylalkynyl, alkoxy, halo, mercapto, azido, cyano, acyl, formyl, carboxylic acid, acylamino, ester, amide, hydroxyl, nitro, alkylthio, amino, alkylamino, arylalkylamino, disubstituted amino, acyloxy, sulfoxyl, sulfonyl, sulfonate, sulfonic acid, sulfonamide, urea, alkoxylacylamino, aminoacyloxy, p-phenylene groups, surface attachment groups, bioconjugatable groups, targeting groups, and water soluble groups.

3. The compound of claim 1 selected from the group consisting of:

L is p-phenylene or a covalent bond;

M 1 is a metal or is absent; and

R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 and R 6 are each independently selected from the group consisting of H, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkylalkyl, cycloalkylalkenyl, cycloalkylalkynyl, heterocyclo, heterocycloalkyl, heterocycloalkenyl, heterocycloalkynyl, aryl, aryloxy, arylalkyl, arylalkenyl, arylalkynyl, heteroaryl, heteroarylalkyl, heteroarylalkenyl, heteroarylalkynyl, alkoxy, halo, mercapto, azido, cyano, acyl, formyl, carboxylic acid, acylamino, ester, amide, hydroxyl, nitro, alkylthio, amino, alkylamino, arylalkylamino, disubstituted amino, acyloxy, sulfoxyl, sulfonyl, sulfonate, sulfonic acid, sulfonamide, urea, alkoxylacylamino, aminoacyloxy, p-phenylene groups, surface attachment groups, bioconjugatable groups, targeting groups, and water soluble groups.

4. The compound of claim 3 , wherein R 1 is alkyl, cycloalkyl, or cyano.

5. The compound of claim 3 , wherein R 6 is H, alkyl, or aryl.

6. The compound of claim 3 , wherein L is a covalent bond.

7. The compound of claim 1 , wherein:

said compound has the formula A-L-D;

A is a group of the formula:

wherein R 1 , R 2 , and R 3 are each independently selected from the group consisting of H, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkylalkyl, cycloalkylalkenyl, cycloalkylalkynyl, heterocyclo, heterocycloalkyl, heterocycloalkenyl, heterocycloalkynyl, aryl, aryloxy, arylalkyl, arylalkenyl, arylalkynyl, heteroaryl, heteroarylalkyl, heteroarylalkenyl, heteroarylalkynyl, alkoxy, halo, mercapto, azido, cyano, acyl, formyl, carboxylic acid, acylamino, ester, amide, hydroxyl, nitro, alkylthio, amino, alkylamino, arylalkylamino, disubstituted amino, acyloxy, sulfoxyl, sulfonyl, sulfonate, sulfonic acid, sulfonamide, urea, alkoxylacylamino, aminoacyloxy, p-phenylene groups, surface attachment groups, bioconjugatable groups, targeting groups, and water soluble groups; and

8. The compound of claim 7 selected from the group consisting of:

9. The compound of claim 8 , wherein R 1 is alkyl, cycloalkyl, or cyano.

10. The compound of claim 8 , wherein R 6 is H, alkyl, or aryl.

11. The compound of claim 8 , wherein L is a covalent bond.

12. The compound of claim 1 , wherein:

said compound has the formula C-L-D;

C is a group of the formula:

wherein R 2 and R 3 are each independently selected from the group consisting of H, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkylalkyl, cycloalkylalkenyl, cycloalkylalkynyl, heterocyclo, heterocycloalkyl, heterocycloalkenyl, heterocycloalkynyl, aryl, aryloxy, arylalkyl, arylalkenyl, arylalkynyl, heteroaryl, heteroarylalkyl, heteroarylalkenyl, heteroarylalkynyl, alkoxy, halo, mercapto, azido, cyano, acyl, formyl, carboxylic acid, acylamino, ester, amide, hydroxyl, nitro, alkylthio, amino, alkylamino, arylalkylamino, disubstituted amino, acyloxy, sulfoxyl, sulfonyl, sulfonate, sulfonic acid, sulfonamide, urea, alkoxylacylamino, aminoacyloxy, p-phenylene groups, surface attachment groups, bioconjugatable groups, targeting groups, and water soluble groups; and

14. The compound of claim 13 , wherein R 6 is H, alkyl, or aryl.

15. The compound of claim 13 , wherein L is a covalent bond.

16. The compound of claim 1 , wherein L is a covalent bond.

17. The compound of claim 6 , wherein:

heterocyclo, as used alone or as part of another group, comprises a monocyclic- or a bicyclic-ring system selected from the group consisting of azetidine, azepine, aziridine, diazepine, 1,3-dioxolane, dioxane, dithiane, furan, imidazole, imidazoline, imidazolidine, isothiazole, isothiazoline, isothiazolidine, isoxazole, isoxazoline, isoxazolidine, morpholine, oxadiazole, oxadiazoline, oxadiazolidine, oxazole, oxazoline, oxazolidine, piperazine, piperidine, pyran, pyrazine, pyrazole, pyrazoline, pyrazolidine, pyridine, pyrimidine, pyridazine, pyrrole, pyrroline, pyrrolidine, tetrahydrofuran, tetrahydrothiophene, tetrazine, tetrazole, thiadiazole, thiadiazoline, thiadiazolidine, thiazole, thiazoline, thiazolidine, thiophene, thiomorpholine, thiomorpholine sulfone, thiopyran, triazine, triazole, trithiane, benzimidazole, benzothiazole, benzothiadiazole, benzothiophene, benzoxadiazole, benzoxazole, benzofuran, benzopyran, benzothiopyran, benzodioxine, 1,3-benzodioxole, cinnoline, indazole, indole, indoline, indolizine, naphthyridine, isobenzofuran, isobenzothiophene, isoindole, isoindoline, isoquinoline, phthalazine, purine, pyranopyridine, quinoline, quinolizine, quinoxaline, quinazoline, tetrahydroisoquinoline, tetrahydroquinoline, and thiopyranopyridine;

surface attachment group comprises a moiety selected from the group consisting of alkene, alkyne, alcohol, thiol, selenyl, phosphono, telluryl, cyano, amino, formyl, halo, boryl, and carboxylic acid surface attachment groups;

biocojugatable group comprises a moiety selected from the group consisting of isocyanates, isothiocyanates, iodoacetamides, azides, diazonium salts, etc., acids or acid derivatives such as N-hydroxysuccinimide esters, acid hydrazides, aldehydes, sulfonyl chlorides, sulfonyl hydrazides, epoxides, hydroxyl groups, thiol groups, maleimides, aziridines, acryloyls, halo groups, biotin, and 2-iminobiotin; and

targeting group comprises a moiety is selected from the group consisting of antibody, one member of a ligand-receptor binding pair, nucleic acids, proteins and peptides; and

water soluble group comprises a polar or ionic group, wherein said polar group comprises a hydroxy, alkoxy, carboxy, nitro, cyano, amino (primary, secondary and tertiary), amido, ureido, sulfonamido, sulfinyl, sulfhydryl, silyl, S-sulfonamido, N-sulfonamido, C-carboxy, O-carboxy, C-amido, N-amido, sulfonyl, phosphono, morpholino, piperazinyl, or tetrazolo group; and wherein said ionic group comprises a carboxylate, sulfonate, phosphate, amine, N-oxide, ammonium, uronic acids, carboxylic acid, sulfonic acid, amine, and moieties such as guanidinium, phosphoric acid, phosphonic acid, phosphatidyl choline, phosphonium, borate, or sulfate group.

18. The compound of claim 11 , wherein:

19. The compound of claim 15 , wherein:

heterocyclo, as used alone or as part of another group, comprises a monocyclic- or a bicyclic-ring system selected from the group consisting of azetidine, azepine, aziridine, diazepine, 1,3-dioxolane, dioxane, dithiane, furan, imidazole, imidazoline, imidazolidine, isothiazole, isothiazoline, isothiazolidine, isoxazole, isoxazoline, isoxazolidine, morpholine, oxadiazole, oxadiazoline, oxadiazolidine, oxazole, oxazoline, oxazolidine, piperazine, piperidine, pyran, pyrazine, pyrazole, pyrazoline, pyrazolidine, pyridine, pyrimidine, pyridazine, pyrrole, pyrroline, pyrrolidine, tetrahydrofuran, tetrahydrothiophene, tetrazine, tetrazole, thiadiazole, thiadiazoline, thiadiazolidine, thiazole, thiazoline, thiazolidine, thiophene, thiomorpholine, thiomorpholine sulfone, thiopyran, triazine, triazole, trithiane, benzimidazole, benzothiazole, benzothiadiazole, benzothiophene, benzoxadiazole, benzoxazole, benzofuran, benzopyran, benzothiopyran, benzodioxine, 1,3-benzodioxole, cinnoline, indazole, indole, indoline, indolizine, naphthyridine, isobenzofuran, isobenzothiophene, isoindole, isoindoline, isoquinoline, phthalazine, purine, pyranopyridine, quinoline, quinolizine, quinoxaline, quinazoline, tetrahydroisoquinoline, tetrahydroquinoline, and thiopyranopyridine;

surface attachment group comprises a moiety selected from the group consisting of alkene, alkyne, alcohol, thiol, selenyl, phosphono, telluryl, cyano, amino, formyl, halo, boryl, and carboxylic acid surface attachment groups;

biocojugatable group comprises a moiety selected from the group consisting of isocyanates, isothiocyanates, iodoacetamides, azides, diazonium salts, etc., acids or acid derivatives such as N-hydroxysuccinimide esters, acid hydrazides, aldehydes, sulfonyl chlorides, sulfonyl hydrazides, epoxides, hydroxyl groups, thiol groups, maleimides, aziridines, acryloyls, halo groups, biotin, and 2-iminobiotin; and

targeting group comprises a moiety is selected from the group consisting of antibody, one member of a ligand-receptor binding pair, nucleic acids, proteins and peptides; and

water soluble group comprises a polar or ionic group, wherein said polar group comprises a hydroxy, alkoxy, carboxy, nitro, cyano, amino (primary, secondary and tertiary), amido, ureido, sulfonamido, sulfinyl, sulfhydryl, silyl, S-sulfonamido, N-sulfonamido, C-carboxy, O-carboxy, C-amido, N-amido, sulfonyl, phosphono, morpholino, piperazinyl, or tetrazolo group; and wherein said ionic group comprises a carboxylate, sulfonate, phosphate, amine, N-oxide, ammonium, uronic acids, carboxylic acid, sulfonic acid, amine, and moieties such as guanidinium, phosphoric acid, phosphonic acid, phosphatidyl choline, phosphonium, borate, or sulfate group.
