Abstract

Sensor platforms and methods of making them are described, and include platforms having horizontally oriented sensor elements comprising nanotubes or other nanostructures, such as nanowires. Under certain embodiments, a sensor element has an affinity for an analyte. Under certain embodiments, such a sensor element comprises one or more pristine nanotubes, and, under certain embodiments, it comprises derivatized or functionalized nanotubes. Under certain embodiments, a sensor is made by providing a support structure; providing a collection of nanotubes on the structure; defining a pattern within the nanotube collection; removing part of the collection so that a patterned collection remains to form a sensor element; and providing circuitry to electrically sense the sensor's electrical characterization. Under certain embodiments, the sensor element comprises pre-derivatized or pre-functionalized nanotubes. Under certain embodiments, sensor material is derivatized or functionalized after provision on the structure or after patterning. Under certain embodiments, a large-scale array includes multiple sensors.

Claims (27)

1. An electric device, comprising:

a flexible substrate;

a conductive article disposed on the flexible substrate, said article comprising a nanotube ribbon for providing a plurality of conductive pathways along the article, wherein said nanotube ribbon is flat and is of a substantially predetermined dimension in which the length and the width of said nanotube ribbon are significantly greater than the height of said nanotube ribbon; and

at least one electrode in electrical communication with at least a portion of the conductive article.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the conductive article has an orientation that is substantially parallel to a major surface of the flexible substrate.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the conductive article substantially conforms to a surface of the flexible substrate.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the conductive article is electromechanically responsive to electrical stimulation by the electrode.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the nanotube ribbon comprises substantially a monolayer of nanotubes.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the flexible substrate comprises plastic.

7. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a support structure for supporting the conductive article.

8. The device of claim 7 , wherein the support structure includes a channel and wherein at least a portion of the conductive article is suspended over the channel.

9. An electrical device, comprising:

a flexible, plastic substrate;

a conductive article disposed on the flexible substrate, said article comprising a nanotube ribbon for providing a plurality of conductive pathways along the article; and

first and second electrodes disposed in spaced relation to one another, wherein the conductive article is electromechanically deflectable to enable or disable electrical communication between the conductive article and one of the first and second electrodes.

10. The device of claim 9 , wherein the conductive article has an orientation that is substantially parallel to a major surface of the flexible, plastic substrate.

11. The device of claim 9 , wherein the nanotube ribbon comprises substantially a monolayer of nanotubes.

12. The device of claim 9 , further comprising a support structure for supporting the conductive article.

13. The device of claim 12 , wherein the support structure includes a channel and wherein at least a portion of the conductive article is suspended over the channel.

14. An electrical device, comprising:

a flexible substrate;

a conductive article disposed on the flexible substrate, said article comprising a nanotube ribbon for providing a plurality of conductive pathways along the article, wherein the nanotube ribbon is electromechanically deflectable to enable or disable electrical communication through the conductive article; and

a pinning structure disposed over at least a portion of the conductive article to secure the conductive article in relation to the flexible substrate.

15. The electrical device of claim 14 , wherein the pinning structure comprises an insulating material.

16. The electrical device of claim 14 , wherein the conductive article is suspended over a portion of the flexible substrate and the pinning structure secures the conductive article in suspended relation to the portion of the flexible substrate.

17. The electrical device of claim 14 , wherein the pinning structure comprises a conductive material.

18. The electrical device of claim 17 , wherein the pinning structure comprises a first and a second portion, each in electrical communication with the conductive article.
