Abstract

The invention pertains to compositions and therapeutic and prophylatic methods for treating/preventing infections in an animal or human by administering a soluble β-glucan composition comprising β-glucan molecules having an average molecular weight of at least 1,000,000 daltons, as determined by multi-angle laser light scattering (VHMW-glucan).

Claims (3)

1. An aqueous soluble underivatized β-glucan composition in one of either dry form or solubilized form comprising β-glucan molecules having an average molecular weight of at least 1,000,000 daltons, as determined by multi-angle laser light scattering, wherein the composition has a triple helix aggregate conformation and enhances host immune defense mechanisms to infection but does not induce an inflammatory response.

2. The aqueous soluble underivatized β-glucan composition of claim 1 wherein the composition is a formulation for oral administration to a human or animal.

3. The aqueous soluble underivatized β-glucan composition of claim 1 and further comprising additional components for oral administration.
