Abstract

Systems and methods of scalable language infrastructure for electronic system level tools. In accordance with embodiments of the present invention, knowledge about types, functions and the like is encapsulated in a plurality of intelligent components called active component extension modules that are external to the infrastructure. The infrastructure implements a communication mechanism between the clients and these intelligent components, and acts as a common backbone. The infrastructure itself does not maintain any knowledge about any client, types, functions, etc. In accordance with a method embodiment of the present invention, a request is received from a client of a language infrastructure. The request is forwarded from the language infrastructure to an active component extension module. The active component extension module performs a service responsive to the request.

Claims (34)

1. An electronic system level tool system comprising:

a processor;

a scalable language infrastructure for execution by said processor, void of information of data structure types, information of functions and symbol tables;

said scalable language infrastructure coupled to a library of intelligent components said library external to said infrastructure;

wherein said intelligent components comprise active component extension modules for execution by said processor, and comprise said information of said data structure types, information of functions and symbol tables; and

wherein said scalable language infrastructure allows new types or functions to be invoked or added to said infrastructure transparent to said infrastructure.

2. A method for use in a language infrastructure for an electronic system level tool, said method comprising:

receiving a request from a client of a language infrastructure, wherein said language infrastructure is void of information of data structure types, information of functions and symbol tables and allows new types or functions to be invoked or added to said infrastructure transparent to said infrastructure;

forwarding said request from said language infrastructure to an active component extension module,

wherein said active component extension module is external to said language infrastructure,

wherein said active component extension module is coupled to said language infrastructure and comprises said information of said data structure types, information of functions and symbol tables; and

performing a service responsive to said request at said active component extension module.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising inquiring of said active component extension module if said active component extension module supports said request.

4. The method of claim 2 further comprising sending a result of said request from said active component extension module to said client.

5. The method of claim 2 wherein said language infrastructure is substantially compliant with C++ language infrastructure.

6. An article of manufacture comprising:

a computer usable media comprising a language infrastructure coupled to a library of intelligent components,

wherein said language infrastructure is void of information of data structure types, information of functions and symbol tables;

wherein said library of intelligent components is external to said language infrastructure;

wherein said intelligent components comprise active component extension modules and comprise said information of said data structure types, information of functions and symbol tables:

wherein said scalable language infrastructure allows new types or functions to be invoked or added to said infrastructure transparent to said infrastructure; and

wherein said intelligent components are for responding to a client request made to said language infrastructure, and wherein further said language infrastructure is for use in Electronic System Level tools.

7. The article of manufacture of claim 6 wherein said client request comprises a request for information of a data structure.

8. The article of manufacture of claim 6 wherein said client request comprises a request for a service.

9. The article of manufacture of claim 8 wherein said service comprises output to a file.

10. An article of manufacture comprising a computer usable media comprising computer usable instructions that responsive to execution on a computing device implement a method for use in a language infrastructure for an Electronic System Level computer tool, said method comprising:

receiving a request from a client of a language infrastructure, wherein said language infrastructure is void of information of data structure types, information of functions and symbol tables and allows new types or functions to be invoked or added to said infrastructure transparent to said infrastructure;

forwarding said request from said language infrastructure to an active component extension module,

wherein said active component extension module is external to said language infrastructure,

wherein said active component extension module is coupled to said language infrastructure and comprises said information of said data structure types, information of functions and symbol tables; and

performing a service responsive to said request at said active component extension module.

11. The article of manufacture of claim 10 wherein said method further comprises inquiring of said active component extension module if said active component extension module supports said request.

12. The article of manufacture of claim 11 wherein said method further comprises sending a result of said request from said active component extension module to said client.

13. The article of manufacture of claim 10 wherein said language infrastructure is a substantially compliant C++ language infrastructure.
