Abstract

A toner cartridge comprises toner and electrical development components which consume a portion of the toner by printing a plurality of images. An electronic circuit stores an indication of the amount of toner remaining, and a value controlling a voltage applied to at least one of the electrical development components. The electronic circuit determines when a predetermined amount of the toner remains in the toner cartridge. When the predetermined amount of toner remains in the toner cartridge, the electronic circuit alters the amount of toner consumed to form images by changing a voltage level applied to at least one of the electrical development components. The electronic circuit alters the amount of toner consumed by replacing the stored value controlling the voltage applied to at least one of the electrical development components with a new value controlling the voltage applied to at least one of the electrical development components.

Claims (27)

1. A method of controlling toner consumption comprising:

providing a toner cartridge comprising toner, electrical development components and an electronic circuit attached to the toner cartridge, the electronic circuit attached to the toner cartridge storing an indication of the amount of toner remaining in the toner cartridge;

consuming a portion of said toner by printing a plurality of images while a voltage is applied to at least one of the electrical development components;

determining, by the electronic circuit attached to the toner cartridge, when a predetermined amount of the toner remains in the toner cartridge; and

when the predetermined amount of toner remains in the toner cartridge, altering the amount of toner consumed to form images by changing the voltage level applied to the at least one of the electrical development components during image formation.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein altering the amount of toner consumed further comprises reducing the amount of toner consumed to form images by increasing the voltage applied to a primary charge roller and decreasing the voltage applied to a developer roller.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein altering the amount of toner consumed further comprises increasing the amount of toner consumed to form images by decreasing the voltage applied to a primary charge roller and increasing the voltage applied to a developer roller.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the electronic circuit attached to the toner cartridge stores a value controlling the voltage applied to the at least one of the electrical development components.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein altering the amount of toner consumed further comprises:

replacing, by the electronic circuit attached to the toner cartridge, the stored value controlling the voltage applied to the at least one of the electrical development components with a new value controlling the voltage applied to the at least one of the electrical development components.

6. The method of claim 5 further comprising, after replacing the stored value:

reading the new value from the electronic circuit attached to the toner cartridge by a printer holding the toner cartridge,

wherein the printer changes the voltage level applied to the at least one of the electrical development components based on the new value read from the electronic circuit attached to the toner cartridge.

7. A toner cartridge comprising:

toner;

electrical development components consuming a portion of said toner by printing a plurality of images while a first voltage is applied to at least one of the electrical development components; and

an electronic circuit attached to the toner cartridge and storing an indication of the amount of toner remaining, the circuit further storing a value controlling the voltage applied to the at least one of the electrical development components,

the electronic circuit attached to the toner cartridge determining when a predetermined amount of the toner remains in the toner cartridge,

the electronic circuit altering the amount of toner consumed to form images by causing a second voltage, different from the first voltage, to be applied to the at least one of the electrical development components when printing additional images, when the predetermined amount of toner remains in the toner cartridge.

The toner cartridge of claim 7 wherein the electronic circuit alters the amount of toner consumed by replacing the stored value controlling the voltage applied to the at least one of the electrical development components with a new value controlling the voltage applied to the at least one of the electrical development components,

wherein the new value is adapted to be read from the electronic circuit attached to the toner cartridge by a printer holding the toner cartridge, the printer adapted for changing the voltage level applied to the at least one of the electrical development components based on the new value read from the electronic circuit attached to the toner cartridge.

9. The toner cartridge of claim 7 wherein the electronic circuit is a replacement electronic circuit replacing an original electronic circuit.

A replacement electronic circuit for use on a remanufactured toner cartridge including toner and electrical development components consuming a portion of said toner by printing a plurality of images while a voltage is applied to at least one of said electrical development components, the replacement electronic circuit comprising:

electronic circuitry adapted for attachment to the remanufactured toner cartridge, the electronic circuitry storing an indication of the amount of toner remaining, the electronic circuitry further storing a value controlling the voltage applied to the at least one of the electrical development components,

said electronic circuitry adapted for attachment to the remanufactured toner cartridge and determining when a predetermined amount of the toner remains in the remanufactured toner cartridge,

said electronic circuit altering the amount of toner consumed to form images by changing the voltage level applied to the at least one of the electrical development components when additional images are printed, when the predetermined amount of toner remains in the remanufactured toner cartridge.

The replacement electronic circuit of claim 10 wherein the electronic circuitry adapted for attachment to the remanufactured toner cartridge alters the amount of toner consumed by replacing the stored value controlling the voltage applied to the at least one of the electrical development components with a new value controlling the voltage applied to the at least one of the electrical development components.
