Abstract

A force detecting element is used to move a moving coil that is formed without ferromagnetic materials and is driven using a stationary coil that is formed without ferromagnetic materials, thereby producing an output signal which is more linear than the previous techniques. The output signal produces an output indicative of a resolution in the range of microns or less.

Claims (21)

1. A method comprising:

using a force detecting element to move a moving coil part linearly, which moving coil part is formed without ferromagnetic materials;

driving said moving coil part with a driving signal, and detecting an induced signal on a stationary coil part which is formed without ferromagnetic materials, to produce an output signal indicative of a moving relationship between said moving coil part and said stationary coil part, said stationary coil part sufficiently close to said moving coil part such that magnetic flux from said moving coil part induces a current in said stationary coil part; and

using said output signal to detect information from said force detecting element indicative of a resolution in detection of relative positions of said coil parts in range of microns or less than microns,

wherein said using said output signal to detect information comprises synchronously detecting the output signal using a multiplier reference signal, where said synchronously detecting is synchronized relative to said drive signal by adjusting a relative phase between said drive signal and said multiplier reference signal, and multiplying said output signal using said multiplier reference signal.

2. A method as in claim 1 , wherein said synchronously detecting comprises synchronizing detection of a characteristic of the output signal relative to a characteristic of said driving signal.

3. A method as in claim 2 , wherein said synchronizing detection comprises phase shifting said output signal relative to said driving signal.

4. A method as in claim 1 , wherein said synchronously detecting comprises using a signal indicative of the driving signal to drive a switch.

5. A method as in claim 1 , wherein said using comprises adjusting a phase delay between said driving signal and said multiplier reference signal, said adjusting changing a relative phase between the driving signal and said multiplier reference signal.

6. A method as in claim 1 , wherein said using comprises phase shifting a signal used as said driving signal.

7. A method as in claim 1 , further comprising forming said driving signal by forming a square wave, and filtering said square with a low pass filter to produce a substantially pure sine wave.

8. A method as in claim 1 , further comprising filtering a signal indicative of said information that is synchronously detected using a low pass filter which removes frequency doubled components.

9. A system, comprising:

a force detecting element including plural different linearly moving coil parts, an input connection to said coil parts, which input connection is adapted to receive a driving signal, and an output portion connected to said coil parts which carries an output signal, and where said linearly moving coil parts include a stationary coil part and a moving coil part, where said stationary coil part and said moving coil part are sufficiently close such that magnetic flux from the moving coil part induces a current in the stationary coil part;

a driving circuit, which produces a driving signal for one of said coil parts, said driving circuit connected to said input connection;

an output signal detecting part, that synchronously detects the output signal from said coil parts, said output signal detecting part is indicative of a resolution in detection of relative positions of said coil parts in a range of microns or less than microns,

and said output signal detecting part including a phase shifting element operating to produce a phase shifted multiplier output signal and to adjust a relative phase between said drive signal and a multiplier reference signal, and said output signal detecting part multiplying said multiplier reference signal by said output signal to thereby synchronously detect the output signal using the phase-adjusted multiplier reference signal.

10. A system as in claim 9 , wherein said phase shifting element is connected between said driving circuit and said multiplier.

11. A system as in claim 9 , wherein said phase shifting element is connected between said driving circuit and said input portion.

12. A system as in claim 9 , wherein said stationary coil includes first and second secondary coils , and a ground connection therebetween, and where output signal detecting part includes a differential amplifier, connected between said first and second secondary coils of said stationary coil part.

13. A system as in claim 9 , further comprising a low pass filter, connected to receive the synchronously detected output signal, and to low pass filter said signal to remove frequency doubled components therefrom.
