Abstract

Apparatus and methods for altering one or more spectral, spatial, or temporal characteristics of a light-emitting device are disclosed. Generally, such apparatus may include a volume Bragg grating (VBG) element that receives input light generated by a light-emitting device, conditions one or more characteristics of the input light, and causes the light-emitting device to generate light having the one or more characteristics of the conditioned light.

Claims (16)

1. Apparatus for conditioning a characteristic of an array of laser emitters, the apparatus comprising:

an array of laser-emitting devices disposed along an array axis; and

a wavelength multiplexer comprising a three-dimensional optical element having a Bragg grating therein, the Bragg grating having a grating period that varies as a function of position along an axis of the Bragg grating that is parallel to the array axis,

wherein the optical element receives input light generated by the array of laser-emitting devices, wherein the light generated by the array of laser-emitting devices is simultaneously combined and conditioned via a feedback that passes through the wavelength multiplexer.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the array of laser-emitting devices is an array of broad-area, multiple-transverse-mode, laser-diode devices.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the wavelength multiplexer is an intra-cavity wavelength multiplexer.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the wavelength multiplexer is an extra-cavity wavelength multiplexer.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the wavelength multiplexer is constructed from one or more Bragg grating elements.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the laser-emitting devices is adapted to operate above threshold in the absence of the feedback.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the laser-emitting devices is adapted to operate below threshold in the absence of the feedback.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the wavelength multiplexer spatially conditions the light generated by the array of laser-emitting devices.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the wavelength multiplexer spectrally conditions the light generated by the array of laser-emitting devices.

The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a partial reflector positioned behind the wavelength multiplexer, wherein the partial reflector provides the feedback into the layer-emitting devices by reflecting light back through the wavelength multiplexer, which separates the light into multiple channels having different wavelengths.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the wavelength multiplexer has a dimension that is approximately equal to a corresponding dimension of at least one of the laser-emitting devices.

12. Apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the three-dimensional optical element is a monolithic glass element having the Bragg grating recorded thereon.

13. Apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the wavelength multiplexer is positioned in an optical path of the light generated by the array of laser-emitting devices.
