Abstract

A micro-lens and a method for forming the micro-lens is provided. A micro-lens includes a substrate and lens material located within the substrate, the substrate having a recessed area serving as a mold for the lens material. The recessed can be shaped such that the lens material corrects for optical aberrations. The micro-lens can be part of a micro-lens array. The recessed area can serve as a mold for lens material for the micro-lens array and can be shaped such that the micro-lens array includes arcuate, non-spherical, or non-symmetrical micro-lenses.

Claims (18)

1. An imager, comprising:

a plurality of pixel cells each having a photosensor;

a light shield configured to allow light to pass to each photosensor;

a color filter assembly providing respective color filters for said plurality of pixel cells;

a substrate positioned over the pixel cells, the substrate having a bottom surface facing towards the pixel cells and an upper surface opposite the bottom surface; and

a first plurality of lens structures respectively associated with said pixel cells for focusing light on respective photosensors, said first plurality of lens structures residing below said color filter assembly, each said lens structure comprising lens material located within a recessed area of the substrate which serves as a mold for the lens material, the recessed area being recessed from the upper surface of the substrate.

2. The imager of claim 1 , wherein the recessed area has at least one arcuate portion.

3. The imager of claim 1 , wherein the recessed area is shaped such that said lens material corrects for optical aberrations.

4. The imager of claim 1 , wherein the substrate comprises silicon dioxide.

5. The imager of claim 1 , wherein the structure of the recessed area provides a focal point of at least one of the first plurality of lens structures, the focal point being associated with a color of light.

6. The imager of claim 1 , further comprising a second plurality of lens structures vertically spaced from the first plurality of lens structures.

7. The imager of claim 1 , further comprising a second plurality of lens structures stacked above the first plurality of lens structures.

8. The imager of claim 7 , wherein each of the first plurality of lens structures is above a corresponding one of the second plurality of lens structures.

9. The imager of claim 7 , wherein the second plurality of lens structures is configured so as to correct for chromatic aberrations.

10. The imager of claim 7 , wherein the second plurality of lens structures is formed in the recessed area of the substrate.

11. The imager of claim 7 , wherein the index of refraction exhibited by the first plurality of lens structures differs from the index of refraction exhibited by the second plurality of lens structures.

12. The imager of claim 7 , wherein the second plurality of lens structures comprises spherical lens structures.

13. The imager of claim 7 , wherein each lens structure of said second plurality of lens structures comprises a lens material located within a second recessed area of the substrate which serves as a mold for the lens material.
