Abstract

A wireless communication system can include at least two base stations coupled with a network, the two base stations transmitting pilot signals that are used to make a soft handoff decision for a communication device based on base station related information received from the communication device, the base station related information being assembled within the communication device by continuously tracking selected base station pilot signals received by the communication device, the selected base station pilot signals sometimes including one or more pilot signals that are not assigned to rake fingers associated with a receiver coupled with the communication device, and at least one of the base stations delivering soft handoff information to the communication device after the soft handoff decision has been made by the network.

Claims (20)

1. A communication device associated with a network having at least two base stations transmitting pilot signals, the communication device comprising:

a receiver configured to receive the pilot signals;

a searcher configured to select at least a pilot signal from among the received pilot signals;

a pilot tracking unit configured to continuously track the at least selected pilot signal until the continuous tracking of the at least selected pilot signal is ceased based at least on a predetermined pilot signal-to-noise ratio, wherein the at least selected pilot signal includes one or more pilot signals that are not assigned to rake fingers, the rake fingers associated with the receiver coupled with the communication device, the pilot tracking unit being a separate component from the searcher, the pilot tracking unit further configured to reduce computational load from the searcher and enable the searcher to primarily identify new signal paths;

a site selection diversity transmission unit configured to receive information gathered by the pilot tracking unit and to change an identity of a base station that presently is servicing the communication device based on the information; and

a controller of the communication device configured to assemble base station related information and deliver the assembled base station related information to the network.

2. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein:

the base station related information includes signal strength reports for base stations about the communication device that have been modified.

3. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein:

a soft handoff information includes information identifying members of an active set of base stations for the communication device.

4. A communication device associated with a network having at least two base stations transmitting pilot signals, the communication device comprising:

a receiver configured to receive the pilot signals;

a searcher of configured to select at least a pilot signal from among the received pilot signals;

a pilot tracking unit configured to continuously track the at least selected pilot signal until the continuous tracking of the at least selected pilot signal is ceased based at least on a predetermined pilot signal-to-noise ratio, wherein the at least selected pilot signal including one or more pilot signals not assigned to rake fingers, the rake fingers associated with the receiver coupled with the communication device, the pilot tracking unit being a separate component from the searcher, the pilot tracking unit further configured to reduce computational load from the searcher and enable the searcher to primarily identify new signal paths;

a site selection diversity transmission unit configured to receive information gathered by the pilot tracking unit and to change an identity of a base station that presently is servicing the communication device based on the information; and

a digital signal processor within the communication device configured to assemble base station related information and deliver the assembled base station related information to the network.

5. The communication device of claim 4 , wherein:

the base station related information includes signal strength reports for base stations about the communication device that have been modified.

6. The communication device of claim 4 , wherein:

a soft handoff information includes information identifying members of an active set of base stations for the communication device.
