Abstract

The present invention provides drilling assembles and methods that are especially useful for a bottom hole drilling assembly for drilling/reaming/or other operations related to drilling a borehole through an earth formation. In one embodiment, the drilling assembly utilizes standard drill collars which are modified to accept force transfer sections. In another embodiment, the drilling assembly comprises a tension inducing sub which creates a force that may be used to place the bottom hole assembly or portions thereof in tension. In another embodiment, a reaming assembly is held in tension to provide a stiffer reaming assembly.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said downhole assembly comprises a plurality of drill collars, said plurality of slidable force transfer members being installed within said plurality of drill collars.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising modifying a plurality of standard drill collars to incorporate said plurality of slidable force transfer members.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising producing said sufficient force by rotating a threaded member.

5. A tension inducing sub for use with a drilling assembly, said drilling assembly comprising a plurality of threaded tubulars and a plurality of force transfer elements slidably mounted within said threaded tubulars operable to transfer a force through said tubulars, said tension inducing sub comprising:

a tubular housing;

a threaded connection for said tubular housing for connecting to said plurality of threaded tubulars; and

a force transfer assembly mounted in said tubular housing for transferring said force through said threaded connection to said plurality of force transfer elements said force transfer assembly comprising a force transfer element being secured to said force transfer assembly for residing within said tubular housing prior to connection to said drilling assembly and as said tubular housing is lifted by a rig to a rosition above said drilling assembly to be threadedbly secured to said drilling assembly for transferring said force through said threaded and such that said force transfer assembly is secured for residing within said tubular housing subsequently to said tubular housing being disconnected and removed from a wellbore.

6. The tension inducing sub of claim 5 , further comprising a threaded member rotatably mounted in said tubular housing operable for creating said force in response to rotation of a second ear rotatably mounted within said tubular housing.

7. A reamer assembly for enlarging a borehole, comprising:

a reamer housing;

one or more reamer blades supported by said reamer housing extendable radially outwardly to engage said borehole to be enlarged;

one or more force transfer members slidably mounted within said reamer housing;

at least one threaded connection for said reamer housing;

at least one tubular connectable to said at least one threaded connection, one or more additional force transfer members mounted within said at least one tubular for transferring a force through said at least one threaded connection to said one or more force transfer members slidably mounted within said reamer housing.

8. The reamer assembly of claim 7 , wherein said at least one tubular further comprises a plurality of weight sections whereby said weight sections produce said force.

9. The reamer of claim 8 , wherein said plurality of weight sections comprise weight sections threadably mounted above and below said reamer.

10. The reamer of claim 8 , further comprising a stop surface for receiving said force mounted so as to be operable for stiffening said reamer housing by placing said reamer housing in tension while said borehole is being enlarged.

11. The reamer of claim 10 , wherein said stop member comprises an upper portion of a drill bit.

12. A method for placing in tension a downhole assembly utilized in a bottom hole assembly of a drill pipe string for drilling oil and gas wells, said method comprising:

providing a plurality of tubulars comprising a plurality of associated threaded connections, said plurality of tubulars being threadably connectable together to form said downhole assembly

providing a plurality of slidable force transfer members within said plurality of tubulars such that said plurality of slidable force transfer members are operable for transferring a sufficient force through each of said plurality of threaded connections to a drilling member during of said borehole to hold one or more of said plurality of tubulars in tension; and producing at least a ortion of said sufficient force utilizing thermal expansion tabs.

13. A tension inducing sub for use with a drilling assembly, said drilling assembly comprising a plurality of threaded tubulars and a plurality of force transfer elements slidably mounted within said threaded tubulars operable to transfer a force through said tubulars, said tension inducing sub comprising:

a tubular housing;

a threaded connection for said tubular housing for connecting to said plurality of threaded tubulars; and

a force transfer assembly mounted in said tubular housing for transferring said force through said threaded connection to said plurality of force transfer elements and

a piston operable for creating said force.

14. A tension inducing sub for use with a drilling assembly, said drilling assembly comprising a plurality of threaded tubulars and a plurality of force transfer elements slidably mounted within said threaded tubulars operable to transfer a force through said tubulars, said tension inducing sub comprising:

a tubular housing;

a threaded connection for said tubular housing for connecting to said plurality of threaded tublars;

a force transfer assembly mounted in said tubular housing for transferring said force through said threaded connection to said plurality of force transfer elements, said force transfer assembly comprising a plurality of gears rotatably mounted within said tubular housing and being interconnected to produce a mechanical advantage whereby an input force is multiplied by said mechanical advantage to produce said force.
