Rotate-to-advance catheterization system
A camera assembly for positioning within a bodily passageway, including a camera, a catheter adapted to retain the camera, and a rotary coupling interconnecting the catheter and the camera. The catheter is provided with helically-wound threads thereon. The rotary coupling permits the catheter to rotate and thereby move axially while the camera remains rotationally stationary.
1. A camera assembly for positioning within a bodily passageway, the assembly comprising a camera, a catheter adapted to retain said camera at a distal end thereof, and at least one rotary coupling adapted to rotate relative to said catheter and disposed at the catheter distal end and interconnecting said catheter and said camera, a helically-wound thread disposed on an outer wall of said catheter such that rotation of said catheter causes said catheter to move along the passageway, wherein said catheter is rotatable and thereby moveable axially by said thread, and said rotary coupling is rotatable such that said catheter is rotatable about its longitudinal axis while the camera remains rotationally stationary, and a fluid tight seal is disposed between said catheter and said rotary coupling.
2. The camera assembly according to claim 1 wherein said thread has a variable thread height.
3. The camera assembly according to claim 2 wherein the thread height tapers along at least a portion of the length of said catheter.
4. The camera assembly according to claim 1 wherein said thread is interrupted along at least a portion of the length of said catheter.
5. The camera assembly according to claim 4 wherein the interrupted thread is arranged in a series of thread segments.
6. The camera assembly according to claim 1 wherein said thread comprises at least two different thread pitches along at least a portion of the length of said catheter.
7. The camera assembly according to claim 1 wherein said thread comprises protrusions.
8. The camera assembly according to claim 7 wherein said protrusions are encapsulated within bioabsorbable material.
9. The camera assembly according to claim 7 wherein said protrusions are encapsulated within temporary material.
10. The camera assembly according to claim 1 wherein said thread comprises recesses.
11. The camera assembly according to claim 10 wherein said recesses are encapsulated within bioabsorbable material.
12. The camera assembly according to claim 10 wherein said recesses are encapsulated within temporary material.
13. The camera assembly according to claim 1 wherein said thread comprises at least one of a group consisting of polyurethane, medical grade stainless steel, silicone, bicarbon, polytetrafluoroethylene, tantalum, titanium and/or nickel-titanium alloy.
14. The camera assembly according to claim 1 wherein said thread comprises bioabsorbable material.
15. The camera assembly according to claim 1 wherein said thread comprises at least two different materials.
