Abstract

The present invention relates to a recombinantly produced, enzymatically active hyaluronan synthase, wherein the recombinantly produced, enzymatically active hyaluronan synthase is a single protein that is a dual-action catalyst that utilizes UDP-GlcA and UDP-GlcNAc to synthesize HA. The recombinantly produced, enzymatically active hyaluronan synthase may be produced from a hyaluronan synthase gene isolated from a microbial source, such as a streptococcal source.

Claims (6)

1. An isolated, recombinantly produced, enzymatically active hyaluronan synthase, wherein the isolated, recombinantly produced, enzymatically active hyaluronan synthase is a single protein that is a dual-action catalyst that utilizes UDP-GlcA and UDP-GlcNAc to synthesize HA.

2. The isolated, recombinantly produced, enzymatically active hyaluronan synthase of claim 1 , wherein the isolated, recombinantly produced, enzymatically active hyaluronan synthase is produced from a hyaluronan synthase gene isolated from a microbial source.

3. The isolated, recombinantly produced, enzymatically active hyaluronan synthase of claim 1 , wherein the isolated, recombinantly produced, enzymatically active hyaluronan synthase is produced from a hyaluronan synthase gene isolated from a streptococcal source.

4. A purified, recombinantly produced, enzymatically active hyaluronan synthase, wherein the recombinantly produced, enzymatically active hyaluronan synthase is a single protein that is a dual-action catalyst that utilizes UDP-GlcA and UDP-GlcNAc to synthesize HA.

5. The purified, recombinantly produced, enzymatically active hyaluronan synthase of claim 4 , wherein the purified, recombinantly produced, enzymatically active hyaluronan synthase is produced from a hyaluronan synthase gene isolated from a microbial source.

6. The purified, recombinantly produced, enzymatically active hyaluronan synthase of claim 4 , wherein the purified, recombinantly produced, enzymatically active hyaluronan synthase is produced from a hyaluronan synthase gene isolated from a streptococcal source.
