Abstract

A unified messaging system enables a subscriber to log into the system remotely and compose and send text messages, such as email messages, using predefined templates and sound input. The sound input may be DTMF or speech. After the subscriber selects an appropriate template, the system confirms the template, and asks the subscriber to provide values for prompted variables, such as dates and times. The system then generates an email message as defined by the selected template and the values of the prompted variables provided by the subscriber. The email message may also include automatic variables, such as the subscriber's name, and company name. The generated email message may be a new message, a reply message, or a forwarding message. The reply and forwarding messages may be generated in response to received email, or in response to other received messages, such as voice mail messages and facsimiles.

Claims (79)

1. A method of creating an electronic message for sending from a communication system, the method comprising:

establishing a telephone connection between the system and a subscriber;

receiving through the telephone connection from the subscriber a first sound input identifying a text template from a plurality of text templates, the text template being for creating electronic messages, wherein the text template comprises a first prompted variable corresponding to a first prompted variable text field of the electronic message, the electronic message comprising a body of text;

prompting the subscriber through the telephone connection to provide a selected first variable value for the first prompted variable from among a plurality of predetermined first variable values;

receiving through the telephone connection from the subscriber a third sound input identifying the selected first variable value for the first prompted variable;

determining from the third sound input the selected first variable value for the first prompted variable;

creating the electronic message from the text template, wherein the step of creating comprises including the selected first variable value of the first prompted variable as text in the first variable text field of the electronic message;

receiving through the telephone connection from the subscriber a second sound input confirming that the subscriber wishes to send the electronic message; and

sending the electronic message.

2. A method in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the third sound input comprises dual tone multi-frequency (DTMF) input, and the step of determining from the third sound input comprises processing the third sound input with a DTMF decoder.

3. A method in accordance with claim 1 , wherein the third sound input comprises first speech input, and the step of determining from the third sound input comprises processing the third sound input with an automatic speech recognition (ASR) module.

4. A method in accordance with claim 3 , wherein the first prompted variable is a time variable.

5. A method in accordance with claim 3 , wherein the first prompted variable is a day of week variable.

6. A method in accordance with claim 3 , wherein the first prompted variable is a date variable.

7. A method in accordance with claim 3 , wherein the first prompted variable is a name variable.

8. A method in accordance with claim 3 , wherein the first prompted variable is a currency variable specifying cost.

9. A method in accordance with claim 3 , wherein the first prompted variable is a number variable.

10. A method in accordance with claim 3 , wherein the first prompted variable is a telephone number variable.

11. A method in accordance with claim 3 , wherein the first prompted variable is a word variable specifying a word from a list predefined by the subscriber.

12. A method in accordance with claim 3 , further comprising:

prompting the subscriber to identify a recipient of the electronic message; and

receiving through the telephone connection from the subscriber an identification of the recipient;

wherein the step of sending comprises transmitting the electronic message to the recipient.

13. A method in accordance with claim 3 , wherein the text template further comprises a second prompted variable corresponding to a second prompted variable text field of the electronic message, the method further comprising:

prompting the subscriber through the telephone connection to provide a selected second variable value for the second prompted variable;

receiving from the subscriber through the telephone connection a fourth sound input identifying the selected second variable value for the second prompted variable; and

determining from the fourth sound input the selected second variable value for the second prompted variable;

wherein the step of creating further comprises including the selected second variable value of the second prompted variable as text in the second variable text field of the electronic message.

14. A method in accordance with claim 13 , wherein the fourth sound input comprises dual tone multi-frequency (DTMF) input, and the step of determining from the fourth sound input comprises processing the fourth sound input with a DTMF decoder.

15. A method in accordance with claim 13 , wherein the fourth sound input comprises second speech input, and the step of determining from the fourth sound input, comprises processing the fourth sound input with the automatic speech recognition (ASR) module.

16. A method in accordance with claim 3 , wherein the text template further comprises a sound tile.

17. A method in accordance with claim 3 , wherein the electronic message is an outgoing email message, the text template further comprises an Original Message automatic variable corresponding to a first automatic variable text field of the outgoing email message, the method further comprising:

including a received message in the first automatic variable text field of the outgoing email message.

18. A method in accordance with claim 17 , wherein the step of sending comprises transmitting the outgoing email message to the sender of the received message.

19. A method in accordance with claim 18 , wherein the received message is an incoming email message received by the subscriber.

20. A method in accordance with claim 18 , wherein the received message is an incoming email message received by the subscriber, the method further comprising:

presenting the subscriber, through the telephone connection, menu options to enable the subscriber to use sound input for (1) reviewing email messages in a message inbox of the subscriber, and (2) selecting the incoming email message from the message inbox of the subscriber.

21. A method in accordance with claim 17 , wherein the step of sending comprises transmitting the outgoing email message to a recipient who is not the sender of the received message.

22. A method in accordance with claim 21 , wherein the received message is an email message received by the subscriber.

23. A method in accordance with claim 3 , further comprising:

attaching a received message to the electronic message.

24. A method in accordance with claim 23 , wherein the received message comprises a facsimile sent to the subscriber.

25. A method in accordance with claim 23 , wherein the received message comprises a voice message sent to the subscriber.

26. A method in accordance with claim 3 , wherein the electronic message is selected from the group consisting of instant message (IM) and short message service (SMS) message.

27. A communication system comprising:

a telephone interface configured to receive telephone calls;

an email interface configured to send and receive email messages;

a memory storing code; and

a processor coupled to the memory, the telephone interface, and the email interface;

wherein the processor is configured to execute the code and, under control of the code, to cause the communication system to perform steps comprising:

connecting a subscriber to the system through the telephone interface;

receiving from the subscriber through the telephone interface a first sound input identifying a template for creating an email message, wherein the template comprises a first prompted variable corresponding to a first prompted variable text field of the email message,

prompting the subscriber through the telephone interface to provide a selected first variable value for the first prompted variable, from among a plurality of predetermined first variable values;

receiving from the subscriber through the telephone interface a third sound input identifying the selected first variable value for the first prompted variable;

determining from the third sound input the selected first variable value for the first prompted variable;

creating the email message from the template;

including the selected first variable value of the first prompted variable as text in the first variable text field of the email message;

receiving from the subscriber through the telephone interface a second sound input confirming that the subscriber wishes to send the email message; and

sending the email message.

28. A communication system in accordance with claim 27 , wherein the third sound input comprises first speech input, and the processor is further configured, under control of the code, to perform steps comprising:

implementing an automatic speech recognition (ASR) module; and

in the course of determining from the third sound input, processing the third sound input with the ASR module.

A communication system in accordance with claim 28 , wherein the first prompted variable is selected from the group consisting of a time variable, a day of week variable, a date variable, a name variable, a currency variable specifying cost, a number variable, a telephone number variable, and a word variable specifying a word from a list predefined by the subscriber.

30. A communication system in accordance with claim 28 , wherein the template further comprises a second prompted variable corresponding to a second prompted variable text field of the email message, and the processor is further configured, under control of the code, to perform steps comprising:

prompting the subscriber to provide through the telephone interface a selected second variable value for the second prompted variable;

receiving from the subscriber through the telephone interface a second speech input identifying the selected second variable value for the second prompted variable;

processing with the ASR module the second speech input to determine the selected second variable value for the second prompted variable; and

including the selected second variable value of the second prompted variable as text in the second prompted variable text field of the email message.

A communication system in accordance with claim 28 , wherein the template comprises an Original Message automatic variable corresponding to a first automatic variable text field of the email message, and the processor is further configured, under control of the code, to include a first received email message in the first automatic variable field of the email message, wherein the message is sent to the sender of the first received email message.

A communication system in accordance with claim 28 , wherein the template comprises an Original Message automatic variable corresponding to a first automatic variable text field of the email message, and the processor is further configured, under control of the code, to include a received message in the first automatic variable field of the email message, and wherein the email message is sent to a person other than the sender of the received message.

An article of manufacture comprising non-transitory machine-readable storage medium with program code stored in the medium, the program code, when executed by at least one processor of a unified communication system comprising a telephone interface configured to receive telephone calls, an email interface configured to send and receive email messages, and the at least one processor, the at least one processor being coupled to a memory, the telephone interface, and the email interface, causes the at least one processor to configure the unified communication system to perform steps comprising:

connecting a subscriber to the system through the telephone interface;

receiving through the telephone interface a first sound input from the subscriber, the first sound input identifying a template from a plurality of text templates, the text template being for creating an email message, wherein the template comprises a prompted variable corresponding to a prompted variable text field of the email message, the template being stored in the memory;

prompting the subscriber to provide for the prompted variable, through the telephone interface, a selected value from among a plurality of predetermined values of the prompted variable;

receiving from the subscriber through the telephone interface a third sound input identifying the selected value for the prompted variable;

determining from the third sound input the selected value for the prompted variable;

creating from the template the email message, wherein the selected value of the prompted variable is included as text in the variable text field of the email message;

receiving from the subscriber through the telephone interface a second sound input confirming that the subscriber wishes to send the email message; and

sending the email message.
