Abstract

One side of a metal sheet is joined to a polymer layer by applying heat to a joining area on the opposite side of the metal. The heat flows through the thin metal to activate a thermoplastic material or heat setting polymer into a bond with the metal. The method can be used to bond the metal sheet to a plastic body or another metal member. It is preferred to use a friction or friction stir tool to heat the metal surface.

Claims (20)

1. A method of attaching a first automotive polymeric body panel with an interposed polymer layer to one side of a second automotive metal sheet body panel, the method comprising:

placing the first automotive polymeric body panel with interposed polymer layer in a predetermined region against the one side of the second automotive metal sheet body panel, such that the polymer layer is between the first automotive polymeric body panel and the second automotive metal sheet body panel; and

heating the opposite side of the second automotive metal sheet body panel at the predetermined region opposite the polymer layer, heat being conducted through the second automotive metal sheet body panel to the region of the polymer layer, as the sole means of heating the polymer layer to obtain adhesive or mechanical attachment of the interposed polymer layer and the first automotive polymeric body panel in the predetermined region with the one side of the second automotive metal sheet body panel.

2. A method as recited in claim 1 in which the interposed polymer layer is a thermoplastic adhesive for attaching the second automotive metal sheet body panel to the first automotive polymeric body panel at the side of the second automotive metal sheet body panel opposite the heated region.

A method as recited in claim 1 in which the interposed polymer layer is a heat activated polymeric adhesive for attaching the second automotive metal sheet body panel to the first automotive polymeric body panel at the side of the second automotive metal sheet body panel opposite the heated region.

4. A method as recited in claim 1 in which the second automotive metal sheet body panel is heated by friction stirring.

5. A method as recited in claim 1 in which the second automotive metal sheet body panel is heated by frictional engagement by the end of a rotating rod.

6. A method as recited in claim 1 in which the heating of the opposite side of the second automotive metal sheet body panel comprises heating using a torch.

7. A method as recited in claim 6 in which the heating torch is a tungsten inert gas welding torch.

8. A method as recited in claim 6 in which the heating torch is a plasma arc welding torch.

9. A method as recited in claim 1 in which the heating of the opposite side of the second automotive metal sheet body panel comprises heating using an oxygen-fuel flame heating system.

10. A method as recited in claim 1 in which the heating of the opposite side of the second automotive metal sheet body panel comprises heating using a laser beam.

11. A method as recited in claim 1 in which the heating of the opposite side of the second automotive metal sheet body panel comprises heating using an electron beam heating apparatus.

12. A method as recited in claim 1 in which the heating of the opposite side of the second automotive metal sheet body panel comprises heating using an induction heating coil.

13. A method as recited in claim 1 in which the heating of the opposite side of the second automotive metal sheet body panel comprises heating using a hollow rod having resistive heating elements enclosed therein.

14. A method as recited in claim 5 in which the rotating rod is metal.

15. A method as recited in claim 5 in which the rotating rod is ceramic.

A method as recited in claim 1 further comprising simultaneously heating the opposite side of the second automotive metal sheet body panel at a plurality of predetermined regions opposite the polymer layer to obtain adhesive or mechanical attachment of the interposed polymer layer and the first automotive polymeric body panel in the plurality of predetermined regions with the one side of the second automotive metal sheet body panel.

A method as recited in claim 1 further comprising sequentially heating the opposite side of the second automotive metal sheet body panel at a plurality of predetermined regions opposite the polymer layer to obtain adhesive or mechanical attachment of the interposed polymer layer and the first automotive polymeric body panel in the plurality of predetermined regions with the one side of the second automotive metal sheet body panel.

18. A method as recited in claim 1 in which the second automotive metal sheet body panel is an inner or outer deck lid panel for a vehicle.
