Abstract

A surgical stapling device particularly suited for endoscopic procedures is described. The device includes a handle assembly and an elongated body extending distally from the handle assembly. The distal end of the elongated body is adapted to engage a disposable loading unit. A control rod having a proximal end operatively connected to the handle assembly includes a distal end extending through the elongated body. A control rod locking member is provided to prevent movement of the control rod until the disposable loading unit is fully secured to the elongated body of the stapling device.

Claims (11)

1. A surgical stapling apparatus comprising:

a) a housing;

b) a movable handle supported by the housing, the movable handle being movable through an actuation stroke;

c) an elongated body extending distally from the housing and defining a longitudinal axis, the elongated body having a tool assembly secured thereto, the tool assembly having a cartridge assembly housing a plurality of surgical staples and an anvil assembly movably mounted in relation to the cartridge assembly;

d) an advancement assembly including an actuation shaft and a driving pawl, the actuation shaft having a toothed rack and being supported at least in part within the housing, the driving pawl being operatively associated with the movable handle and biased into engagement with the rack, wherein during the actuation stroke, the driving pawl is movable to effect advancement of the actuation shaft, the advancement of the actuation shaft effecting ejection of staples from the cartridge assembly and forming of staples against the anvil assembly;

e) a locking member biased toward the toothed rack, the locking member having a first position engaging the toothed rack, to maintain the position of the toothed rack, and a second position disengaged from the toothed rack; and

f) a button supported in the housing for selectively urging the locking member out of engagement with the toothed rack.

A surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising a slide plate slidably mounted with respect to the actuation shaft so that upon retraction of the actuation shaft, the slide plate prevents the locking member from moving to the first position during retraction of the actuation shaft.

A surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein a retraction mechanism further comprises a release plate operatively associated with the actuation shaft, the release plate being movable relative to the actuation shaft into operative engagement with the driving pawl to disengage the driving pawl from the rack.

A surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein the retraction mechanism further includes at least one retractor knob positioned externally of the housing, the at least one retractor knob being operatively connected to the release plate and movable to move the release plate into engagement with the driving pawl.

A surgical stapling apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein the release plate includes at least one cam slot and the actuation shaft has a pin positioned within each cam slot, the release plate being connected to the at least one retractor knob by a coupling rod such that movement of the coupling rod causes the release plate to move relative to the actuation shaft causing the pin to cam the release plate into engagement with the driving pawl.
