Abstract

A medical procedure for use in connection with a patient suffering from cuff tear arthropathy is disclosed. The medial procedure includes providing a humeral prosthesis having a prosthetic head component, wherein (i) the prosthetic head component includes a glenoid-bearing portion and an acromion-bearing portion, and (ii) the glenoid-bearing portion and the acromion-bearing portion define an outer bearing surface, and (iii) the outer bearing surface extends in a medial/lateral direction across a radial distance D, and (iii) D≧190°. The medical procedure further includes implanting the humeral prosthesis in the patient so that the acromion-bearing portion contacts and bears directly against a natural acromion of the patient during abduction of an arm of the patient that possesses the humerus.

Claims (20)

1. A medical procedure involving a humeral prosthesis and used in connection with a patient suffering from cuff tear arthropathy, the humeral prosthesis having a prosthetic head component, wherein (i) the prosthetic head component includes a glenoid-bearing portion and an acromion-bearing portion, and (ii) the glenoid-bearing portion and the acromion-bearing portion define an outer bearing surface, and (iii) the outer bearing surface extends in a medial/lateral direction across a radial distance D, and (iii) D≧190°, comprising:

implanting the humeral prosthesis in the patient so that the acromion-bearing portion contacts and bears directly against a natural acromion of the patient during abduction of an arm of the patient that possesses the humerus,

wherein the implanting step further includes implanting the humeral prosthesis in the patient so that the glenoid-bearing portion contacts and bears directly against at least a part of a glenoid surface of the patient during abduction of the arm of the patient.

2. The medical procedure of claim 1 , wherein the glenoid surface is a natural glenoid surface.

3. The medical procedure of claim 1 , wherein the glenoid surface is a prosthetic glenoid surface.

The medical procedure of claim 1 , wherein the implanting step further includes implanting the humeral prosthesis in the patient so that the glenoid-bearing portion contacts and bears directly against an inferior surface of the natural acromion of the patient during abduction of the arm of the patient.

5. The medical procedure of claim 1 , wherein the implanting step further includes implanting the humeral prosthesis in the patient so that abduction of the arm of the patient in a superior direction causes no superior movement of the prosthetic head component.

6. The medical procedure of claim 1 , wherein the implanting step further includes implanting the humeral prosthesis in the patient so that a sixty (60) degree abduction of the arm of the patient in a superior direction causes no superior movement of the prosthetic head component.

7. The medical procedure of claim 1 , further comprising resecting at least a portion of a natural head of a humerus of the patient.

8. The medical procedure of claim 7 , further comprising resecting a natural greater tubercle of the humerus of the patient.

9. A medical procedure involving a humeral prosthesis having a prosthetic head component, wherein the prosthetic head component includes a glenoid-bearing portion and an acromion-bearing portion, comprising:

implanting the humeral prosthesis in the patient so that during abduction of an arm of the patient which possesses the humerus, (i) the acromion-bearing portion contacts and bears directly against a natural acromion of the patient, and (ii) the glenoid-bearing portion contacts and bears directly against at least a part of a natural glenoid surface of the patient.

The medical procedure of claim 9 , wherein the implanting step further includes implanting the humeral prosthesis in the patient so that the glenoid-bearing portion contacts and bears directly against an inferior surface of the natural acromion of the patient during abduction of the arm of the patient.

11. The medical procedure of claim 9 , wherein the implanting step further includes implanting the humeral prosthesis in the patient so that abduction of the arm of the patient in a superior direction causes no superior movement of the prosthetic head component.

12. The medical procedure of claim 9 , wherein the implanting step further includes implanting the humeral prosthesis in the patient so that a sixty (60) degree abduction of the arm of the patient in a superior direction causes no superior movement of the prosthetic head component.

13. The medical procedure of claim 9 , wherein:

the glenoid-bearing portion and the acromion-bearing portion define an outer bearing surface, and

the outer bearing surface extends in a medial/lateral direction across a radial distance D, and (iii) D≧200°.

14. The medical procedure of claim 9 , further comprising resecting at least a portion of a natural head of a humerus of the patient prior to said implanting step.

15. The medical procedure of claim 14 , further comprising resecting a natural greater tubercle of the humerus of the patient prior to said implanting step.
