Abstract

A system for facilitating wireless communication. The system includes a client device configured to operate in a plurality of networks. The system also includes a server coupled to the plurality of networks and managed by an enterprise. The server is configured to store connectivity information of the client device, to route incoming media data addressed to the client device using the connectivity information of the client device, and to route outgoing media data originated from the client device through the server. The connectivity information pertains to connectivity of the client device with at least one network of the plurality of networks.

Claims (40)

1 . A system for facilitating wireless communication, said system comprising:

a client device configured to operate in a plurality of networks; and

a server coupled to said plurality of networks and managed by an enterprise,

wherein said server configured to store connectivity information of said client device, to route incoming media data addressed to said client device using said connectivity information of said client device, and to route outgoing media data originated from said client device through said server;

said connectivity information pertains to connectivity of said client device with at least one network of said plurality of networks.

2 . The system of claim 1 wherein said plurality of networks includes communication networks implemented based on different communication standards.

3 . The system of claim 1 wherein said plurality of networks includes a voice communication network and an Internet protocol data network.

4 . The system of claim 1 wherein said server is further configured to store presence state information of a user of said client device.

5 . The system of claim 4 wherein said presence state information pertains to at least one of a media type and user status.

6 . The system of claim 4 wherein said presence state information includes at least one of a text type, a voice type, a video type, a multimedia type, a message type, a real-time type, an available status, an idle status, an offline status, an online status, a busy status, and an invisible status.

7 . The system of claim 1 wherein said connectivity information includes radio signal strength information.

8 . The system of claim 1 wherein said server is further configured to provide transcoding for at least one of said incoming media data and said outgoing media data.

9 . The system of claim 1 wherein said server is further configured to provide transcoding for a plurality of voice codec formats.

10 . The system of claim 1 wherein said server is further configured to determine whether to trigger a handoff of said client device from a first radio station to a second radio station using said connectivity information.

11 . The system of claim 1 wherein said server is further configured to simultaneously maintain signaling between said client device and a first radio station and signaling between said client device and a second radio station before said client device completes a handoff from said first radio station to said second radio station.

The system of claim 1 wherein said client device includes a mobility manager application module configured to monitor said connectivity of said client device with at least one network of said plurality of networks and to update said connectivity information to said server, said mobility manager application module being implemented on an application layer according to the open system interconnection (OSI) model.

13 . The system of claim 1 wherein the client device includes a call control application module configured to determine whether to trigger a handoff of said client device from a first radio station to a second radio station using said connectivity information.

14 . A client device comprising:

a mobility manager application module for monitoring connectivity of said client device to a plurality of networks; and

a call control application module for determining whether to trigger a handoff of said client device from a first radio station to a second radio station based on said connectivity of said client device to said plurality of networks.

15 . The client device of claim 14 wherein at least one of said mobility manager application module and said call control application module is implemented on an application layer according to the open systems interconnection (OSI) model.

16 . The client device of claim 14 wherein at least one of said mobility manager application module and said call control application module is downloaded to said client device through at least one of a network connection and a storage device.

17 . A method for facilitating wireless communication of a client device, the client device connecting with a first radio station of a first network, the method comprising:

storing connectivity information pertaining to connectivity of said client device with said first radio station and connectivity of said client device with a second radio station,

wherein the storing is performed by a server managed by an enterprise.

18 . The method of claim 17 further comprising routing all incoming media data addressed to said client device through said server.

19 . The method of claim 17 further comprising routing all outgoing media data originated from said client device through said server.

20 . The method of claim 17 further comprising determining whether to trigger a handoff of said client device from said first radio station to said second radio station using the connectivity information.

21 . The method of claim 17 further comprising simultaneously maintaining signaling between said client device and said first radio station and signaling between said client device and said second radio station before said client device completes a handoff from said first radio station to said second radio station.

22 . The method of claim 17 wherein said first radio station and said second radio station are implemented based on different communication standards.

23 . The method of claim 17 wherein at least one of said first radio station and said second radio station is implemented based on data communication standards.

24 . The method of claim 17 further comprising monitoring presence state information of a user of the client device, the present state information pertaining to at least one of a media type and user status.

25 . The method of claim 24 wherein the presence state information includes at least one of a text type, a voice type, a video type, a multimedia type, a message type, and a real-time type.

26 . The method of claim 24 further comprising providing incoming media data to said client device according to said presence state information.

27 . The method of claim 17 further comprising transcoding incoming media data originated from a second network and addressed to said client device, said second network and said first network implemented based on different communication standards, said transcoding performed by said server.

28 . The method of claim 27 wherein said transcoding involves transcoding for a plurality of voice codec formats.

29 . The method of claim 27 wherein said incoming media data is not transcoded by said second network.

30 . The method of claim 17 further comprising transcoding outgoing media data originated from said client device and addressed to a user device connected with a second network, said second network and said first network implemented based on different communication standards, said transcoding performed by said server.

31 . The method of claim 30 wherein said outgoing media data is not transcoded by said second network.

32 . The method of claim 17 further comprising downloading a mobility manager application module to the client device for monitoring said connectivity of said client device with said first radio station and connectivity of said client device with a second radio station, wherein said mobility manager application module is downloaded to said client device through at least one of a network connection and a storage device.
