Abstract

A method and system for automatically analyzing and searching a database of images or other digital content includes a process for analyzing images to identify portions capable of receiving text. In one implementation user input is received, where the user input helps construct a profile matrix representing image features desired by the user. The constructed profile matrix is compared to profile matrices of the database of images, and images are retrieved with profile matrices corresponding to the constructed profile matrix.

Claims (36)

1. A tangible computer-readable medium storing instructions for defining a display description for providing a user interface to search digital content stored within a database, comprising:

a first display description portion defining first user interface components configured to receive user input to identify search criteria for digital content stored within the database based on text-based metadata,

wherein at least some of the digital content stored in the database includes metadata searchable based on user input to the first user interface components; and further

wherein the digital content consists of one or more still or moving digital images; and

a second display description portion defining second user interface components configured to permit a user to specify search criteria for digital content having portions within the digital content capable of receiving text,

wherein at least some of the digital content stored in the database is analyzed to determine portions capable of receiving text without obscuring or distorting the text; and further

wherein the digital content consists of one or more still or moving digital images.

2. The tangible computer-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the second user interface portion is a 3 by 3 grid that permit a user to select one or more portions of the 3 by 3 grid in which text may or may not be placed.

3. A computer-implemented method of providing a user interface for allowing a user to selectively search digital content stored in a database, the method comprising:

displaying a first display portion of a user interface,

wherein the first portion is configured to receive a first user input specifying a first search criteria based on text-based metadata to identify respective ones of the digital content stored within the database that are tagged with the text-based metadata; and further

wherein the digital content consists of one or more still or moving digital images; and

displaying a second display portion of the user interface,

wherein the second portion is configured to receive a second user input specifying a second search criteria to identify the respective digital content tagged with the text-based metadata having one or more portions thereof capable of receiving text or other displayable information without obscuring or distorting the text or other displayable information; and further

wherein the digital content consists of one or more still or moving digital images.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the second display portion displays multiple elements in a grid to represent the one or more portions of the digital content, wherein the second display portion initially displays the multiple elements in the grid as representations of the one or more portions of the digital content that include one of text space and image content, and wherein the at least some of the multiple elements in the grid represent a “don't care” symbol for portions that may receive either text or image content.

5. The method of claim 3 wherein the second display portion displays multiple elements in a grid to represent the one or more portions of the digital content, and wherein the second display portion initially displays the multiple elements in the grid as representations of the one or more portions of the digital content that include one of text space and image content.

6. The method of claim 3 wherein the second display portion displays multiple elements in a grid to represent the one or more portions of the digital content.

7. The method of claim 3 wherein the second display portion displays multiple elements in a grid to represent the one or more portions of the digital content, wherein the second search criteria includes specified ones of the plurality of elements in the grid selected by a user to represent the one or more portions of the digital content capable of receiving text or other displayable information.

8. The method of claim 3 wherein the second display portion displays multiple elements in a grid to represent the one or more portions of the digital content, and wherein the second search criteria includes specified ones of the multiple elements in the grid selected by the user to represent the one or more portions of the digital content that include image content.

9. The method of claim 3 wherein the second display portion displays multiple elements in a grid to represent the one or more portions of the digital content, and wherein the multiple elements in the grid form a 3×3 grid format.

10. The method of claim 3 wherein the second display portion displays multiple elements in a grid to represent the one or more portions of the digital content, wherein the second search criteria includes specified ones of the multiple elements in the grid selected by a user to represent the one or more portions of the digital content capable of receiving either text or other displayable information.

11. A tangible computer-readable medium carrying instructions, which when executed by a computer, perform a method of providing a user interface for allowing a user to selectively search digital content stored in a database, the method comprising:

displaying a first display portion of a user interface,

wherein the first portion is configured to receive a first user input specifying a first search criteria based on text-based metadata to identify respective ones of the digital content stored within the database that are tagged with the text-based metadata; and further

wherein the digital content consists of one or more still or moving digital images; and

displaying a second display portion of the user interface,

wherein the second portion is configured to receive a second user input specifying a second search criteria to identify the respective digital content tagged with the text-based metadata having one or more portions thereof capable of receiving text or other displayable information without obscuring or distorting the text or other displayable information; and further

wherein the digital content consists of one or more still or moving digital images.

12. The tangible computer-readable medium of claim 11 wherein the second display portion displays multiple elements in a grid to represent the one or more portions of the digital content, wherein the second display portion initially displays the multiple elements in the grid as representations of the one or more portions of the digital content that include one of text space and image content, and wherein the at least some of the multiple elements in the grid represent a “don't care” symbol for portions that may receive either text or image content.

13. The tangible computer-readable medium of claim 11 wherein the second display portion displays multiple elements in a grid to represent the one or more portions of the digital content, and wherein the second display portion initially displays the multiple elements in the grid as representations of the one or more portions of the digital content that include one of text space and image content.

14. The tangible computer-readable medium of claim 11 wherein the second display portion displays multiple elements in a grid to represent the one or more portions of the digital content.

15. The tangible computer-readable medium of claim 11 wherein the second display portion displays multiple elements in a grid to represent the one or more portions of the digital content, wherein the second search criteria includes specified ones of the plurality of elements in the grid selected by a user to represent the one or more portions of the digital content capable of receiving text or other displayable information.

16. The tangible computer-readable medium of claim 11 wherein the second display portion displays multiple elements in a grid to represent the one or more portions of the digital content, and wherein the second search criteria includes specified ones of the multiple elements in the grid selected by the user to represent the one or more portions of the digital content that include image content.

17. The tangible computer-readable medium of claim 11 wherein the second display portion displays multiple elements in a grid to represent the one or more portions of the digital content, and wherein the multiple elements in the grid form a 3×3 grid format.

18. The tangible computer-readable medium of claim 11 wherein the second display portion displays multiple elements in a grid to represent the one or more portions of the digital content, wherein the second search criteria includes specified ones of the multiple elements in the grid selected by a user to represent the one or more portions of the digital content capable of receiving either text or other displayable information.
