Abstract

A system for collecting and disposing of liquid medical waste includes a fluid collection cart and a draining and cleaning station. The fluid collection cart includes a pair of containers, each of which includes a draining port and a cap. Each cap includes an outer portion having a flushing port and a bore formed therein and an inner portion having vacuum and patient ports formed therein. The inner cap portion is disposable and removably positioned within the bore of the outer cap portion. Liquid level detectors also communicate with each container. The cart also includes a regulator so a low vacuum level may be pulled on one of the containers while a full vacuum level is pulled on the other container. Fluids are collected in the containers via suction tubes connected to the patient ports. The flushing and drain ports of the containers are connected to corresponding flushing and drain connectors on the station when the containers are full so that they may be drained and flushed. The cart liquid level detectors communicate with the station microprocessor so that the draining and flushing cycles may be properly sequenced. The station may also clean suction canisters.

Claims (38)

1. A system for collecting and disposing of medical waste comprising:

a) a container having a patient port, a vacuum port and a drain port, said patient port adapted to communicate with a suction line and said vacuum port adapted to communicate with a vacuum source so that medical waste is collected in said container through the suction line connected to the patent port when the vacuum port is connected to the vacuum source;

b) a cleaning nozzle positioned within said container;

c) a dispenser containing an additive and adapted to communicate with a source of water;

d) a flushing pump in circuit between the dispenser and the cleaning nozzle;

e) a liquid level detector in communication with the container;

f) a microprocessor in communication with the liquid level detector and the flushing pump so that said flushing pump is activated by the microprocessor when the liquid level detector senses that collected medical waste has been drained from the container through the drain port so that the drained container is flushed with a flushing liquid consisting of water and the additive through the cleaning nozzle.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the additive is cleaning solution.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the additive is disinfecting solution.

4. The system of claim 3 wherein the disinfecting solution is bleach.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein said cleaning nozzle rotates so that flushing liquid is sprayed onto interior surfaces of the container.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein said cleaning nozzle includes a top hat shaped portion featuring a plurality of orifices through which the flushing liquid flows and a brim portion positioned beneath the orifices so that flushing liquid from the orifices cascades over the brim.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the liquid level detector is a capacitance sensor.

8. The system of claim 1 further comprising a drain pump in communication with the drain port of the container and the microprocessor so that the microprocessor may sequence draining and flushing of the container.

9. The system of claim 1 further comprising a body featuring a plurality of wheels, said body supporting the container so that the system may be rolled across a surface.

10. The system of claim 1 further comprising a disposable cap removably positioned on said container, said cap including the patient port and the vacuum port.

11. A system for collecting and disposing of medical waste comprising:

a) a container having a patient port, a vacuum port and a drain port, said patient port adapted to selectively communicate with a suction line and said vacuum port adapted to selectively communicate with a vacuum source so that medical waste is collected in said container through the suction line connected to the patent port when the vacuum port is connected to the vacuum source;

b) a cleaning nozzle positioned within said container;

c) a source of disinfecting fluid;

d) a flushing pump in circuit between the source of disinfecting fluid and the cleaning nozzle;

e) a liquid level detector in communication with the container;

f) a microprocessor in communication with the liquid level detector and the flushing pump so that said flushing pump is activated by the microprocessor when the liquid level detector senses that collected medical waste has been drained from the container through the drain port so that the drained container is flushed with disinfecting fluid from the source of disinfecting fluid through the cleaning nozzle.

12. The system of claim 11 wherein said cleaning nozzle rotates so that disinfecting fluid is sprayed onto interior surfaces of the container.

13. The system of claim 11 wherein said cleaning nozzle includes a top hat shaped portion featuring a plurality of orifices through which the disinfecting fluid flows and a brim portion positioned beneath the orifices so that disinfecting fluid from the orifices cascades over the brim.

14. The system of claim 11 wherein the liquid level detector is a capacitance sensor.

15. The system of claim 11 further comprising a drain pump in communication with the drain port of the container and wherein said source of disinfecting fluid includes a flushing pump and wherein said drain pump and said flushing pump are in communication with the microprocessor so that the microprocessor may sequence draining and flushing of the container.

16. The system of claim 11 further comprising a body featuring a plurality of wheels, said body supporting the container so that the system may be rolled across a surface.

17. The system of claim 11 further comprising a disposable cap removably positioned on said container, said cap including the patient port and the vacuum port.

18. A system for collecting and disposing of medical waste comprising:

a) a container having a patient port, a vacuum port and a drain port, said patient port adapted to communicate with a suction line and said vacuum port adapted to communicate with a vacuum source so that medical waste is collected in said container through the suction line connected to the patent port when the vacuum port is connected to the vacuum source;

b) a cleaning nozzle rotatably positioned within said container;

c) a source of flushing liquid;

d) a flushing pump in circuit between the source of flushing liquid and the cleaning nozzle;

e) a liquid level detector in communication with the container;

f) a microprocessor in communication with the liquid level detector and the flushing pump so that said flushing pump is activated by the microprocessor when the liquid level detector senses that collected medical waste has been drained from the container through the drain port so that the drained container is flushed with flushing liquid through the rotating cleaning nozzle.

19. The cart of claim 18 wherein said cleaning nozzle includes a top hat shaped portion featuring a plurality of orifices through which the flushing liquid flows and a brim portion positioned beneath the orifices so that flushing liquid from the orifices cascades over the brim.

20. The system of claim 18 further comprising a body featuring a plurality of wheels, said body supporting the container so that the system may be rolled across a surface.
