Abstract

The present invention relates to a light emitting device and a driving method thereof. The light emitting device comprises a plurality of data lines in a first direction, a plurality of scan lines in a second direction different from the first direction, and a plurality of sub-pixels formed on emitting areas that the data lines and the scan lines cross. A sub-pixel corresponding to a first outmost data line in the data lines emits a light having less brightness than a predetermined first brightness of the sub-pixel. The method of driving the light emitting device having a plurality of sub-pixels formed on emitting areas crossed by data lines and scan lines comprises changing first display data to second display data, and providing data currents corresponding to the second display data to the data lines. A data current provided to a first outmost data line in the data lines is less than a data current of a predetermined first gray scale. In the light emitting device and driving method thereof according to the present invention, a stripe pattern according to the sub-pixels corresponding to the outmost data lines does not appear since the gray scale of the sub-pixels corresponding to the outmost data lines is set up lower than a predetermined gray scale.

Claims (34)

1 . A light emitting device, comprising:

a plurality of data lines in a first direction;

a plurality of scan lines in a second direction different from the first direction; and

a plurality of sub-pixels formed on emitting areas that the data lines and the scan lines cross,

wherein a sub-pixel corresponding to a first outmost data line in the data lines emits a light having less brightness than a predetermined first brightness of the sub-pixel.

2 . The device of claim 1 , wherein a sub-pixel corresponding to a second outmost data line in the data lines emits a light having less brightness than a predetermined second brightness of the sub-pixel.

3 . The device of claim 2 , wherein the second brightness is different from the first brightness.

4 . The device of claim 3 , further comprising:

a scan driving circuit which provides scan signals to the scan lines; and

a data driving circuit which provides data currents synchronized with the scan signals to the data lines,

wherein a data current provided to the first outmost data line is less than a data current according to a predetermined gray scale.

5 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the device is an organic electroluminescent device.

6 . A light emitting device, comprising:

a plurality of anode electrode layers in a first direction;

a first dummy anode electrode layer disposed outside of a first outmost anode electrode layer in the anode electrode layers;

a plurality of cathode electrode layers in a second direction different from the first direction;

a plurality of sub-pixels formed on emitting areas that the anode electrode layers and the cathode electrode layers cross; and

a plurality of first dummy pixels formed on areas that the first dummy anode electrode layer and the cathode electrode layers cross,

wherein at least one first dummy pixel emits a white light.

7 . The device of claim 6 , wherein the sub-pixels are disposed on a display area.

8 . The device of claim 6 , further comprising:

a second dummy anode electrode layer disposed outside of a second outmost anode electrode layer in the anode electrode layers; and

a plurality of second dummy pixels formed on an area that the second dummy anode electrode layer and the cathode electrode layer cross,

wherein at least one second dummy pixel emits a white light.

9 . The device of claim 8 , wherein the gray scale of the second dummy pixels is changed according to the gray scale of the second dummy pixel and a sub-pixel corresponding to the second outmost anode electrode layer.

10 . The device of claim 6 , wherein the gray scale of the first dummy pixel is changed according to the gray scale of the first dummy pixel and a sub-pixel corresponding to the first outmost anode electrode layer.

11 . The device of claim 6 , wherein the sub-pixels include red sub-pixels, green sub-pixels, blue sub-pixels, and white sub-pixels.

12 . The device of claim 6 , wherein the device is an organic electroluminescent device.

13 . A method of driving a light emitting device having a plurality of sub-pixels formed on emitting areas crossed by data lines and scan lines, comprising:

(a) changing first display data to second display data; and

(b) providing data currents corresponding to the second display data to the data lines,

wherein a data current provided to a first outmost data line in the data lines is less than a data current of a predetermined first gray scale.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein a data current provided to a second outmost data line in the data lines is less than a data current of a predetermined second gray scale.
