Abstract

The present invention provide Auto Detect mechanisms to automatically determine the connectivity configuration of a handset. The Auto Detect mechanisms are used to develop applications that do not require connection configurations from the user and that work with handset settings as they are, whether the wireless device is set for WAP access or Direct HTTP access. The Auto Detect mechanisms enable applications to auto-detect and use the correct setting for connecting to a backend server, which may depend upon the wireless network, the handset, and the handset configuration.

Claims (51)

1 . A method for auto-detection of a wireless connection for an application on a wireless device, comprising:

attempting to establish a wireless connection using a first connection mechanism; and

if the attempt fails, attempting to establish a wireless connection using a second connection mechanism.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first connection mechanism uses a WAP APN and the second connection mechanism uses a Direct HTTP APN.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first connection mechanism uses a Direct HTTP APN and the second connection mechanism uses a WAP APN.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein if the first attempt to establish the wireless connection is successful, storing settings for the first connection mechanism on the wireless device, and using the stored settings to establish future wireless connections for subsequent executions of the application on the wireless device.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein if the second attempt to establish the wireless connection is successful, storing settings for the second connection mechanism on the wireless device, and using the stored settings to establish future wireless connections for subsequent executions of the application on the wireless device.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a default connection mechanism for a wireless network used by the wireless device; and

using the default connection mechanism as the first connection mechanism.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein determining the default connection comprises consulting a table listing different wireless networks and a default connection for each listed wireless network.

8 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising determining the wireless network used by the wireless device by retrieving properties of the wireless device stored on the wireless device.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein determining the default connection comprises consulting a table listing different wireless networks and a default connection for each listed wireless network.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first connection mechanism comprises a connection mechanism stored on the wireless device and successfully used to establish a wireless connection during a previous execution of the application.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein attempting to establish a wireless connection using the first connection mechanism comprises:

sending a request to a server using the first connection mechanism; and

waiting for a response from the server.

12 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

observing a response time for receiving the response from the server; and

sending information of the observed response time to the server.

13 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

waiting for the response from the server for a wait time based on a given wireless network and the wireless device.

14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the application comprises a gaming application that utilizes wireless connection to a backend server.

15 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the application comprises a shopping application that utilizes wireless connection to a backend server.

16 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the application comprises a mobile commerce application that utilizes wireless connection to a backend server.

17 . A wireless device, comprising:

an application stored on a storage medium, wherein the application comprises:

instructions for attempting to establish a wireless connection using a first connection mechanism; and

if the attempt fails, instructions for attempting to establish a wireless connection using a second connection mechanism.

18 . The wireless device of claim 17 , wherein the first connection mechanism uses a WAP APN and the second connection mechanism uses a Direct HTTP APN.

19 . The wireless device claim 17 , wherein the first connection mechanism uses a Direct HTTP APN and the second connection mechanism uses a WAP APN.

20 . The wireless device claim 17 , wherein if the first attempt to establish the wireless connection is successful, the application comprises instructions for storing settings for the first connection mechanism in the storage medium, and instructions for using the stored settings to establish future wireless connections for subsequent executions of the application on the wireless device.

21 . The wireless device of claim 17 , wherein if the second attempt to establish the wireless connection is successful, the application includes instructions for storing settings for the second connection mechanism on the wireless device, and instructions for using the stored settings to establish future wireless connections for subsequent executions of the application on the wireless device.

22 . The wireless device of claim 17 , wherein the application further comprises:

instructions for determining a default connection mechanism for a wireless network used by the wireless device; and

instructions for using the default connection mechanism as the first connection mechamsm.

23 . The wherein device of claim 22 , wherein the instructions for determining the default connection comprise instructions for consulting a table listing different wireless networks and a default connection for each listed wireless network.

24 . The wireless device of claim 22 , wherein the application further comprises instructions for determining the wireless network used by the wireless device by retrieving properties of the wireless device stored on the wireless device.

25 . The wireless device of claim 24 , wherein the instructions for determining the default connection comprise instructions for consulting a table listing different wireless networks and a default connection for each listed wireless network.

26 . The wireless device of claim 17 , wherein the first connection mechanism comprises a connection mechanism stored on the wireless device and successfully used to establish a wireless connection during a previous execution of the application.

27 . The wireless device of claim 17 , wherein the instructions for attempting to establish a wireless connection using the first connection mechanism comprises:

instructions for sending a request to a server using the first connection mechanism; and

instructions for waiting for a response from the server.

28 . The wireless device of claim 27 , wherein the application further comprises:

instructions for observing a response time for receiving the response from the server; and

instructions for sending information of the observed response time to the server.

29 . The wireless device of claim 28 , wherein the application further comprises:

instructions for waiting for the response from the server for a wait time based on a given wireless network and the wireless device.

30 . The wireless device of claim 17 , wherein the application comprises a gaming application that utilizes wireless connection to a backend server.

31 . The wireless device of claim 17 , wherein the application comprises a shopping application that utilizes wireless connection to a backend server.

32 . The wireless device of claim 17 , wherein the application comprises a mobile commerce application that utilizes wireless connection to a backend server.
