Biomimetic hydroxyapatite synthesis
View Patent ↗A method for preparing nanoscale hydroxyapatite particles by combining an amount of a calcium ion source, which includes calcium acetate, and an amount of a phosphate ion source, wherein the amounts are sufficient to produce nanoscale hydroxyapatite particles and the amounts are combined under ambient conditions to produce the hydroxyapatite particles. Nanoscale hydroxyapatite particles are also presented.
1. Powdered hydroxyapatite particles comprising a BET surface area between about 200 and about 3000 m 2 /g and a particle size wherein the largest dimension of any particle is between about 1 nm and about 9 nm, said particles comprising crystals with a dominant lattice spacing of about 0.28 nm.
2. The powdered hydroxyapatite of claim 1 consisting essentially of particles having a dispersed particle size wherein the largest dimension of any particle is between about 1 nm and about 9 nm.
3. The powdered hydroxyapatite of claim 1 consisting essentially of particles having an aggregated particle size wherein the largest dimension of any particle is between about 2 nm and about 5 mm.
4. The powdered hydroxyapatite of claim 1 , further comprising an amorphous phase.
5. The powdered hydroxyapatite of claim 1 , wherein the ion ratio of calcium to phosphate is between 1.25 and 2.5.
6. The powdered hydroxyapatite particles of claim 1 wherein said particles are doped with one or more ions suitable for substitution into the HAp lattice.
7. A stable colloidal suspension comprising the hydroxyapatite particles of claim 1 suspended in a biocompatible ionic solution.
8. The suspension of claim 7 , wherein said ionic solution is formed from the mother liquor from which said hydroxyapatite particles were produced.
9. The suspension of claim 7 , wherein said ionic solution comprises a solution prepared independently of the hydroxyapatite particles.
10. The powdered hydroxyapatite of claim 1 further comprising a drug.
