Abstract

A system and method of building a satellite communications network provides a customer-driven, modular and flexible approach to providing satellite communications services. The satellite network provider carves out a solution for a customer problem from a design space constrained by satellite size, lifetime and payload given a set of specifications from a customer. The satellite network provider may continually gauge the needs of the users of the system in order to adapt the network to the current and future needs of the customer(s). Further, the use of small satellites utilizing on-board functionality provides modularity while maintaining economic feasibility.

Claims (23)

1 . A method for designing a satellite communications system, comprising the steps of:

offering a customer a set of parameters and values for the parameters that constitutes a design space for the customer to make choices;

having a customer provide system specifications into the design space; and

generating satellite system designs for the customer from the system specifications.

2 . The method according to claim 1 wherein the parameters comprise at least one of the group consisting of (i) satellite size, (ii) satellite lifetime, and (iii) satellite payload.

3 . The method according to claim 1 wherein the specifications comprise at least one of the group consisting of (i) bandwidth, (ii) security, (iii) antenna control, (iv) satellite control, and (v) footprint specifications.

4 . The method according to claim 1 wherein the solutions are derived from at least one of the group consisting of (i) economics, (ii) technology, and (iii) performance.

5 . A method for deploying a satellite communications system, comprising the steps of:

launching a first satellite into an orbital position, the satellite having communications capabilities;

assessing a plurality of criteria for the satellite communications system;

launching one or a plurality of additional satellites into an orbital position to satisfy the criteria;

evaluating any additional user criteria; and

responding to the additional user criteria by launching into the system at least one of the group consisting of (i) new satellites, and (ii) replacement satellites.

6 . The method according to claim 5 wherein one or a plurality of additional satellites are launched into one of the group consisting of (i) the same orbital slot as the first satellite, and (ii) a different orbital slot as the first satellite.

7 . The method according to claim 5 wherein the new and replacement satellites are equipped with latest changes in technology.

8 . A satellite system launch and placement decision-making and implementation method, comprising the steps of:

preselecting a plurality of performance factors;

evaluating the factors via software components in the satellite system;

developing and designing a new satellite per the performance factors;

installing the new satellite into the system through a launch into a pre-assigned orbital position; and

updating a system network status to account for the new satellite.

9 . The method according to claim 8 wherein the performance factors comprise at least one of the group consisting of (i) footprint coverage, (ii) satellite constellation topology, (iii) bandwidth, (iv) capacity, and (v) number of users per satellite.

10 . The method according to claim 8 wherein the performance factors and the evaluation of the performance factors are further used to determine the optimal location of the new satellite.
