Abstract

The present invention provides monopolar acetabular liners ( 32, 54 ) that can enclose a femoral head ( 14 ) to form a hip replacement prosthesis ( 30, 50 ), wherein the liner ( 32, 54 ) has a rim ( 34 ) that creates an orifice, wherein the orifice has a diameter that is smaller than the diameter of the femoral head ( 14 ), and wherein the liner ( 32, 54 ) encompasses greater than 50 percent of the volume of the head ( 14 ), wherein a constraining ring ( 56 ) can be used in conjunction with the monopolar constrained acetabular liner ( 32, 54 ) to provide additional support for the femoral head ( 14 ) to stay with the acetabular liner ( 32, 54 ) and avoid dislocation. Assemblies and complete prosthetic replacements are also provided. Liners ( 32, 54 ) and constraining rings ( 56 ) having no, one or more recesses ( 36 ) also are provided.

Claims (18)

1. A cut away monopolar acetabular liner for enclosing a femoral head to form a hip replacement prostheses, wherein the hip replacement prostheses comprises a constraining ring having at least two positioned recesses, wherein the cut away monopolar acetabular liner has a rim that creates an orifice, and wherein the orifice has a diameter that is smaller than the diameter of the femoral head, wherein the cut away monopolar acetabular liner accommodates the constraining ring, wherein the cut away monopolar acetabular liner contains at least two positioned recesses that are compatible with the recesses on the constraining ring, wherein the recesses facilitate increased range of motion in a desired direction, wherein the cut away monopolar acetabular liner is used with the constraining ring and accommodates the femoral head and prevents dislocation, wherein the constraining ring fits around the perimeter of the cut away monopolar acetabular liner to serve as a structural support of the liner and to ensure that the femoral head stays within the acetabular liner, and wherein the cut away of the liner permits a greater range of motion.

2. The liner according to claim 1 , wherein the rim extends beyond the center line of the head when the head is enclosed by the cut away monopolar acetabular liner.

3. The liner according to claim 1 , wherein the cut away monopolar acetabular liner comprises cross-linked ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE).

4. The liner according to claim 3 , wherein the UHMWPE is cross-linked by irradiation.

5. The liner according to claim 1 , wherein the femoral head has a diameter of 32 mm or larger.

6. A monopolar acetabular assembly comprising (A) a cut away monopolar acetabular liner; (B) a constraining ring having at least two positioned recesses, wherein the cut away monopolar acetabular liner accommodates the constraining ring for enclosing a femoral head, wherein the cut away monopolar acetabular liner has a rim that creates an orifice, and wherein the orifice has a diameter that is smaller than the diameter of the femoral head, wherein the cut away monopolar acetabular liner is used with the constraining ring and accommodates the femoral head and prevents dislocation, wherein the constraining ring fits around the perimeter of the cut away monopolar acetabular liner to serve as a structural support of the liner and to ensure that the femoral head stays within the acetabular liner, wherein the cut away monopolar acetabular liner contains at least two positioned recesses that are compatible with the recesses on the constraining ring, and wherein the cut away of the liner permits a greater range of motion; and (C) a metal shell, wherein the acetabular liner is set into the metal shell.

7. The assembly according to claim 6 , wherein the rim extends beyond the center line of the head when the head is enclosed by the cut away monopolar acetabular liner.

8. The assembly according to claim 6 , wherein the metal shell is made of titanium, stainless steel, or chrome cobalt alloy.

9. The assembly according to claim 6 , wherein the femoral head has a diameter of 32 mm or larger.

10. The assembly according to claim 6 , wherein the cut away monopolar acetabular liner has at least two recesses, and wherein the recesses facilitate increased range of motion in a desired direction.

11. A hip joint replacement assembly comprising (A) a cut away monopolar acetabular liner; (B) a constraining ring having at least two positioned recesses, wherein the cut away monopolar acetabular liner accommodates the constraining ring for enclosing a femoral head, wherein the cut away monopolar acetabular liner has a rim that creates an orifice, and wherein the orifice has a diameter that is smaller than the diameter of the femoral head, wherein the cut away monopolar acetabular liner is used with the constraining ring and accommodates the femoral head and prevents dislocation, wherein the constraining ring fits around the perimeter of the cut away monopolar acetabular liner to serve as a structural support of the liner and to ensure that the femoral head stays within the acetabular liner, wherein the cut away monopolar acetabular liner contains at least two positioned recesses that are compatible with the recesses on the constraining ring, and wherein the cut away of the liner permits a greater range of motion; (C) a metal shell, wherein the acetabular liner is set into the metal shell; and (C) a femoral head.

12. The replacement assembly according to claim 11 , wherein the femoral head is integral with or modular on a femoral stem.

13. The replacement assembly according to claim 12 , wherein the femoral stem is made of a cobalt chrome alloy, stainless steel, or titanium.

14. The replacement assembly according to claim 11 , wherein the femoral head is made of a cobalt chrome alloy, stainless steel, or ceramic.

15. The replacement assembly according to claim 11 , wherein the rim extends beyond the center line of the head when the head is enclosed by the cut away monopolar acetabular liner.

16. The replacement assembly according to claim 11 , wherein the metal shell is made of titanium, stainless steel, or a cobalt chrome alloy.

17. The replacement assembly according to claim 11 , wherein the femoral head has a diameter of 32 mm or larger.

18. The replacement assembly according to claim 11 , wherein the cut away monopolar acetabular liner has at least two recesses, and wherein the recesses facilitate increased range of motion in a desired direction.
