Abstract

Cognitive impairments are treated and cognition is improved with an amphetamine compound. In one embodiment, the method includes administering an l-amphetamine compound. In another embodiment, the method includes administering an l-methamphetamine compound.

Claims (34)

. A method of treating a human having an impairment in memory associated with a stroke, comprising the step of administering a composition that includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of l-amphetamine and l-methamphetamine to the human.

. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition administered to the human includes l-amphetamine.

. The method of claim 2 , wherein the composition includes at least about 80 mole percent l-amphetamine relative to a total amphetamine content of the composition.

. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition administered to the human includes l-methamphetamine.

. The method of claim 4 , wherein the composition includes at least about 80 mole percent l-methamphetamine relative to a total methamphetamine content of the composition.

. The method of claim 1 , wherein the impairment in memory in the human is determined by a Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test.

. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one member selected from the group consisting of short-term memory, working memory, long-term memory, memory consolidation, procedural memory and declarative memory is improved in the human following administration of the composition.

. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition includes l-amphetamine administered to the human at a daily dose of between about 1 mg l-amphetamine and about 150 mg l-amphetamine.

. The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition includes l-methamphetamine administered to the human at a daily dose of between about 1 mg l-methamphetamine and about 150 mg l-methamphetamine.

. A method of treating a human for an impairment in a cognitive function associated with a stroke, comprising the step of administering a composition that includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of l-amphetamine and l-methamphetamine to the human.

. The method of claim 10 , wherein the composition administered to the human includes l-amphetamine.

. The method of claim 11 , wherein the composition includes at least about 80 mole percent l-amphetamine relative to a total amphetamine content of the composition.

. The method of claim 10 , wherein the composition administered to the human includes l-methamphetamine.

. The method of claim 13 , wherein the composition includes at least about 80 mole percent l-methamphetamine relative to a total methamphetamine content of the composition.

. The method of claim 10 , wherein at least one member selected from the group consisting of attention, executive function, reaction time, learning, information processing, conceptualization, problem solving and verbal fluency is improved in the human following administration of the composition.

. The method of claim 10 , wherein the composition includes l-amphetamine administered to the human at a daily dose of between about 1 mg l-amphetamine to about 150 mg l-amphetamine.

. The method of claim 10 , wherein the composition includes l-methamphetamine administered to the human at a daily dose of between about 1 mg l-methamphetamine and about 150 mg l-methamphetamine.

. A method of treating a human having an impairment in memory associated with a traumatic brain injury, comprising the step of administering a composition that includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of l-amphetamine and l-methamphetamine to the human.

. The method of claim 18 , wherein the composition administered to the human includes l-amphetamine.

. The method of claim 19 , wherein the composition includes at least about 80 mole percent l-amphetamine relative to a total amphetamine content of the composition.

. The method of claim 18 , wherein the composition administered to the human includes l-methamphetamine.

. The method of claim 21 , wherein the composition includes at least about 80 mole percent l-methamphetamine relative to a total methamphetamine content of the composition.

. The method of claim 18 , wherein the impairment in memory in the human is determined by a Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test.

. The method of claim 18 , wherein at least one member selected from the group consisting of short-term memory, working memory, long-term memory, memory consolidation, procedural memory and declarative memory is improved in the human following administration of the composition.

. The method of claim 18 , wherein the composition includes l-amphetamine administered to the human at a daily dose of between about 1 mg l-amphetamine and about 150 mg l-amphetamine.

. The method of claim 18 , wherein the composition includes l-methamphetamine administered to the human at a daily dose of between about 1 mg l-methamphetamine and about 150 mg l-methamphetamine.

. A method of treating a human for an impairment in a cognitive function associated with a traumatic brain injury, comprising the step of administering a composition that includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of l-amphetamine and l-methamphetamine to the human.

. The method of claim 27 , wherein the composition administered to the human includes l-amphetamine.

. The method of claim 28 , wherein the composition includes at least about 80 mole percent l-amphetamine relative to a total amphetamine content of the composition.

. The method of claim 27 , wherein the composition administered to the human includes l-methamphetamine.

. The method of claim 30 , wherein the composition includes at least about 80 mole percent l-methamphetamine relative to a total methamphetamine content of the composition.

. The method of claim 27 , wherein at least one member selected from the group consisting of attention, executive function, reaction time, learning, information processing, conceptualization, problem solving and verbal fluency is improved in the human following administration of the composition.

. The method of claim 27 , wherein the composition includes l-amphetamine administered to the human at a daily dose of between about 1 mg l-amphetamine to about 150 mg l-amphetamine.
