Abstract

The present invention relates to chemical compounds, methods for their discovery, and their therapeutic use. In particular, the present invention provides benzodiazepine derivatives and methods of using benzodiazepine derivatives as therapeutic agents to treat a number of conditions associated with the faulty regulation of the processes of programmed cell death, autoimmunity, inflammation, and hyperproliferation, and the like.

Claims (15)

1. A method for inhibiting proliferation of cells comprising: exposing proliferating target cells having mitochondria to a benzodiazepine compound of Formula I to inhibit proliferation of said cells, wherein Formula I is represented by:

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, R enantiomer, S enantiomer, or a racemic mixture thereof; wherein:

R 1 is alkyl;

R 2 is halogen;

R 5 is one of the following:

and

n is 0-5.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said benzodiazepine compound binds to oligomycin sensitivity conferring protein.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said target cells are in vitro cells.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said target cells are in vivo cells.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said target cells are ex vivo cells.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said target cells are cancer cells.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein said target cells are selected from the group consisting of B cells, T cells, and granulocytes.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein R 5 is

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein R 5 is
