Bridging wick and method for an inkjet printhead
View Patent ↗Some embodiments of the present invention provide an inkjet printhead within which a removable ink cartridge can be installed. Upon installation, the ink cartridge can be coupled to one or more wicks in the printhead for establishing fluid communication between one or more chambers in the ink cartridge and nozzles through which ink exits the printhead during operation. The wick can extend from a cartridge receptacle to a substantially enclosed ink reservoir in order to transport ink from the removable cartridge to the ink reservoir.
1. A removable ink cartridge adapted to be disposed in a printhead, the ink cartridge comprising:
an ink cartridge housing dimensioned to be disposed in a receptacle of the printhead;
a reservoir disposed in the housing and separated from the receptacle by a barrier;
an ink retaining medium disposed in the reservoir; and
an outlet disposed in the housing the outlet dimensioned to receive a wick that extends from the receptatacle to the reservoir;
wherein the wick is operatively coupled to the removable ink cartridge when the removable ink cartridge is installed in the receptacle; and
wherein further the wick is operatively coupled to the ink retaining medium disposed in the reservoir.
2. The ink cartridge of claim 1 , wherein a fluidic path extends from the ink retaining medium to the wick.
3. The ink cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the wick includes a portion that extends into the outlet of the removable ink cartridge when the removable ink cartridge is installed in the receptacle.
4. The ink cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the ink retaining medium is suitable for retaining ink and substantially entirely occupies the interior of the ink reservoir.
5. The ink cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the ink retaining medium comprises any material or combinations of materials capable of retaining fluid by capillary action.
6. The ink cartridge of claim 1 , further comprising one or more vent apertures.
7. The ink cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the barrier is a wall located between the receptacle and the reservoir.
8. The ink cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the barrier comprises some or all of a wall of the housing.
9. The ink cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the receptacle and reservoir each have a bottom and a top, respectively; and the wick is an elongated piece of material extending from the receptacle to the reservoir.
10. The ink cartridge of claim 1 , further comprising a lid affixed to the housing.
