Abstract

An optical transmission fiber is formed to include a relatively low-index, relatively thin outer cladding layer disposed underneath the protective polymer outer coating. Stray light propagating along an inner cladding layer(s) within the fiber will be refracted into the thin outer cladding (by proper selection of refractive index values). The thin dimension of the outer cladding layer allows for the stray light to “leak” into the outer coating in a controlled, gradual manner so as to minimize heating of the coating associated with the presence of stray light. The inventive fiber may also be bent to assist in the movement of stray light into the coating.

Claims (14)

1. An optical fiber configured to facilitate the removal of stray light, the optical fiber comprising

a core region for substantially confining and propagating an optical signal;

an inner cladding layer surround said core region, said inner cladding layer exhibiting a refractive index less than the core region refractive index;

an outer cladding layer surrounding said inner cladding layer, said outer cladding layer exhibiting a refractive index less than the refractive index of said inner cladding so as to capture stray light propagating along said inner cladding layer, and having a thickness substantially less than the inner cladding to controllably dissipate captured stray light away from the optical fiber; and

an outer coating surround said outer cladding layer and having a refractive index greater than the inner cladding layer refractive index, wherein the stray light captured by the outer cladding will gradually tunnel into the outer coating over an extended length thereof, reducing localized heating of said outer coating by the stray light.

2. An optical fiber as defined in claim 1 wherein the outer cladding further comprises a plurality of scattering sites for efficiently moving stray light from the inner cladding layer to said outer cladding layer.

3. An optical fiber as defined in claim 1 wherein the numerical aperture between the inner cladding and the outer cladding is in the range of 0.15 to 0.33.

4. An optical fiber as defined in claim 1 wherein the outer cladding layer exhibits a thickness no greater than 10 μm.

5. An optical fiber as defined in claim 4 wherein the outer cladding layer exhibits a thickness no greater than 5 μm.

6. An optical fiber as defined in claim 1 wherein the outer coating comprises a polymer material.

7. An optical fiber as defined in claim 1 wherein a substantially step index difference in refractive index is present between the inner cladding layer and the outer cladding layer.

8. An optical fiber as defined in claim 7 wherein the index difference between the inner and outer cladding layers is approximately 0.0167.

9. An optical fiber as defined in claim 1 wherein the outer cladding layer exhibits a graded index profile, decreasing in value from the interface with the inner cladding to the outer coating layer.

10. An optical fiber as defined in claim 1 wherein the outer cladding layer exhibits a graded refractive index profile, increasing in value from the interface with the inner cladding layer to the outer coating layer.
