Abstract

An E-ink display and method for repairing the same is provided. The method is for repairing a thin film transistor array substrate of the E-ink display. The thin film transistor array substrate having a plurality of pixel units is provided initially. Each of the pixel unit includes a thin film transistor and a pixel electrode. The thin film transistor has a gate electrode, a source electrode and a drain electrode. The gate electrode, the source electrode and the drain electrode are connected electrically to a scan line, a data line and the pixel electrode respectively. A portion of the pixel electrode is located above the scan line. Next, a repairing portion is formed at the space between the scan line and the pixel electrode. The repairing portion is utilized to electrically connect the pixel electrode and the scan line.

Claims (18)

1. A method for repairing a thin film transistor array substrate of an E-ink display, the thin film transistor array substrate having a plurality of pixel units, each of the pixel units connected with a scan line and a data line, wherein at least one of the pixel units is defective, the method comprising:

providing the thin film transistor array substrate, each of the pixel units including a thin film transistor and a pixel electrode, the thin film transistor having a gate electrode, a source electrode and a drain electrode, wherein the gate electrode, the source electrode and the drain electrode are connected electrically to the scan line, the data line and the pixel electrode respectively, wherein a portion of the pixel electrode is located above the scan line and the scan line further comprises a protruding portion; and

forming a repairing portion at the space between the protruding portion of the scan line and the pixel electrode, wherein the repairing portion is utilized to electrically connect the pixel electrode and the scan line so as to maintain a repaired pixel unit of the pixel units to display a color corresponding to a low voltage level for the E-ink display, and the pixel electrode covers the entire protruding portion.

2. A method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the step of forming comprises using a laser welding method to form the repairing portion.

3. A method as recited in claim 2 , further comprising a step of adjusting a focus of a laser beam to weld the pixel electrode and the scan line together.

4. A method for repairing a thin film transistor array substrate of an E-ink display, the thin film transistor array substrate having a plurality of pixel units, each of the pixel units connected with a scan line and a data line, at least one of the pixel units being defective, the method comprising:

providing the thin film transistor array substrate, each of the pixel units including a thin film transistor and a pixel electrode, the thin film transistor having a gate electrode, a source electrode and a drain electrode, wherein the gate electrode, the source electrode and the drain electrode are connected electrically to the scan line, the data line and the pixel electrode respectively, the scan line having a protruding portion, wherein a portion of the pixel electrode is located above the scan line and the pixel electrode covers the entire protruding portion; and

forming a repairing portion at the space between the protruding portion and the pixel electrode, wherein the repairing portion is utilized to electrically connect the pixel electrode and the scan line so as to maintain a repaired pixel unit of the pixel units to display a color corresponding to a low voltage level for the E-ink display.

5. A method as recited in claim 4 , wherein the step of forming comprises using a laser welding method to form the repairing portion.

6. A method as recited in claim 5 , further comprising a step of adjusting a focus of a laser beam to weld the pixel electrode and the scan line together.

7. An E-ink display comprising:

a first substrate having a plurality of pixel units, each of the pixel units connected with a scan line and a data line, at least one of the pixel units being repaired, wherein the scan line comprises a protruding portion;

a second substrate opposed to the first substrate, the second substrate having a transparent electrode layer; and

an E-ink layer sandwiched between the first substrate and the second substrate, the E-ink layer having a plurality of charged particles and liquid, wherein at least one optical characteristic of the pixel unit is varied by the dispersion state of charged particles in the liquid;

wherein each of the pixel units comprises a thin film transistor and a pixel electrode, the thin film transistor having a gate electrode, a source electrode and a drain electrode, wherein the gate electrode, the source electrode and the drain electrode are connected electrically to the scan line, the data line and the pixel electrode respectively, wherein a repairing portion is formed at the space between the protruding portion of the scan line and the pixel electrode to electrically connect the pixel electrode and the scan line so as to maintain the repaired pixel unit of the pixel units to display a color corresponding to a low voltage level for the E-ink display, and the pixel electrode is located above the scan line and the pixel electrode covers the entire protruding portion.

8. An E-ink display as recited in claim 7 , wherein the E-ink layer comprises a plurality of microcapsules.

9. An E-ink display as recited in claim 7 , wherein the thin film transistor is a top-gate-type thin film transistor.

10. An E-ink display as recited in claim 7 , wherein the thin film transistor is a bottom-gate-type thin film transistor.
