117 . A method for programming a controller that controls the infusion of an infusate, said method comprising the steps of:
A) defining a total volume of infusate to be infused or the total amount of a substance contained in the infusate to be delivered parameter;
B) defining an initial rate parameter;
C) defining a maximum rate parameter;
D) defining a minimum duration parameter;
E) defining a maximum duration parameter;
F) defining an incremental step rate parameter; and
G) defining an incremental step duration parameter.
118 . A method according to claim 117 wherein defining of parameters is accomplished by an operator manually entering information to the controller.
119 . A method according to claim 117 wherein the device further comprises a reader apparatus and wherein said parameters are defined in Steps A-G by using the reader apparatus to read a barcode or other machine readable code.
120 . A method according to claim 117 wherein the device further comprises a memory device that is connected or connectable to the controller and wherein said parameters are defined in Steps A-G by copying information contained in the memory device.
121 . A method according to claim 117 wherein the device further comprises a computer that is connected or connectable to the controller and wherein said parameters are defined in Steps A-G by copying information contained in the computer.

A method according to claim 121 wherein the device further comprises a remotely located computer that communicates with the controller through a wired or wireless connection and wherein the parameters are defined in Steps A-G by a remote operator who enters the parameters on the remote computer.
