Abstract

A current-driven display according to one embodiment includes a circuit producing a variable average output current during a frame period in response to a variable average input current received during a line period, wherein a ratio of high and low values of the output current is different than a ratio of high and low values of the input current. Additional systems and methods are claimed.

Claims (37)

1 . A current-driven display, comprising:

a circuit producing a variable average output current during a frame period in response to a variable average input current received during a line period,

wherein a ratio of high and low values of the output current is different than a ratio of high and low values of the input current.

2 . A circuit as recited in claim 1 , wherein the output current flows through a light emitting diode.

3 . A circuit as recited in claim 1 , wherein the ratio of high and low values of the output current is greater than a ratio of high and low values of the input current.

4 . A circuit as recited in claim 3 , wherein the ratio of high and low values of the output current is at least 10 times greater than the ratio of high and low values of the input current.

5 . A method for illuminating pixels, comprising:

during a select line period, for each pixel in a display:

applying a current to a data line coupled to a selected pixel;

storing a voltage in the pixel based on the current;

during a frame period:

storing the voltages in the pixels;

during an illumination period of the frame period: applying a voltage to the data lines.

6 . A method as recited in claim 5 , wherein, during the frame period, a higher voltage is applied to the data lines during the storing the voltages in the pixels than during the illumination period.

7 . A method as recited in claim 5 , wherein storing the voltage in the pixel further comprises manipulating a voltage on a select line coupled to the pixel for closing a first switch between the data line and a storage node, the storage node being coupled to a gate and an electrode of a second switch between the data line and a light emitting diode; and after a period of time, changing the voltage on the select line for opening the first switch.

8 . A method as recited in claim 7 , wherein the storage node includes at least two capacitances, wherein a first capacitance is positioned between the storage node and the select line, wherein the second capacitance is positioned between the storage node and a common node, wherein the first and second capacitances are about equal.

9 . A method as recited in claim 7 , wherein a common node is coupled to the storage node and the gate of the second switch, wherein the common node is set to maintain open the second switch during the select line period, wherein the common node is set to close the second switch during the illuminate period.

10 . A method as recited in claim 7 , further comprising, during an illumination period, returning the storage node to about a same voltage as the storage node had at an end of the line period.

11 . A method as recited in claim 7 , further comprising, during an illumination period, returning the storage node to a lower voltage than the storage node had at an end of the line period.

12 . A method as recited in claim 5 , wherein, for illuminating a pixel to a brightness level below a predetermined threshold, a majority of the brightness is created during the line period.

13 . A method as recited in claim 12 , wherein, for illuminating a pixel to a brightness level above a predetermined threshold, a majority of the brightness is created during the frame period.

14 . A method for illuminating pixels, comprising:

during a select line period, for each pixel in a display:

applying a current to a data line coupled to a selected pixel;

manipulating a voltage on a select line coupled to the pixel for closing a first switch between the data line and a storage node, the storage node being coupled to agate and an electrode of a second switch between the data line and a light emitting diode; and

after a period of time, changing the voltage on the select line for opening the first switch.

15 . A method as recited in claim 14 , wherein the storage node includes at least two capacitances, wherein a first capacitance is positioned between the storage node and the select line, wherein the second capacitance is positioned between the storage node and a common node, wherein the second capacitance is larger than the first capacitance.

16 . A method as recited in claim 14 , wherein, when illuminating a pixel to a brightness level below a predetermined threshold, a majority of the brightness is created during the line period.

17 . A method as recited in claim 16 , wherein, when illuminating a pixel to a brightness level above a predetermined threshold, a majority of the brightness is created during the frame period.

18 . A method as recited in claim 14 , further comprising, during an illumination period, returning the storage node to about a same voltage as the storage node had at an end of the line period.

19 . A method as recited in claim 14 , further comprising, during an illumination period, returning the storage node to a lower voltage than the storage node had at an end of the line period.

20 . A method as recited in claim 14 , further comprising:

during a frame period:

storing voltages in the pixels;

during an illumination period of the frame period:

applying a voltage to the data lines;

returning each storage node to a lower voltage than the storage node had at an end of the line period.
