Abstract

A multi-speed transmission has four planetary gear sets and five torque-transmitting mechanisms packaged in at least one of six possible zones within the transmission casing.

Claims (27)

1. A multi-speed transmission comprising:

a transmission casing having a first end wall, a second end wall, and a housing portion interconnecting the first end wall and the second end wall; wherein the end walls and the housing portion define a cavity;

an input member;

an output member;

first, second, third and fourth planetary gear sets within the cavity, each planetary gear set having a first member, a second member, and a third member;

wherein the transmission casing and the planetary gear sets define six zones within the cavity, including a first zone extending axially from the first end wall to one of the planetary gear sets, a second, a third, and a fourth zone extending axially between different adjacent pairs of the planetary gear sets, a fifth zone extending axially from another one of the planetary gear sets to the second end wall; the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth zones extending radially to an outer surface of a radially outermost one of the members, and a sixth zone bordering the first, second, third, fourth and fifth zones and extending radially outward to the housing portion and axially between the first and second walls;

wherein the second member of the first planetary gear set is continuously connected for common rotation with the first member of the second planetary gear set; wherein the second member of the second planetary gear set is continuously connected for common rotation with the first member of the third planetary gear set; wherein the second member of the third planetary gear set is continuously connected for common rotation with the first member of the fourth planetary gear set; wherein the third member of the third planetary gear set is continuously connected for common rotation with the third member of the fourth planetary gear set; wherein the third member of the first planetary gear set is grounded to the transmission casing; wherein the input member is continuously interconnected for common rotation with the first member of the first planetary gear set; wherein the output member is continuously interconnected for common rotation with the first member of the fourth planetary gear set; and

five torque-transmitting mechanisms located in at least one of the zones and selectively engagable in different combinations, wherein each engaged torque transmitting mechanism interconnects a respective one of the members of the first, second, third, and fourth planetary gear one of the input member, the output member, the transmission casing, and another respective one of said members of the planetary gear sets to achieve eight forward speed ratios and a reverse speed ratio between the input member and the output member.

2. The transmission of claim 1 , wherein the five torque-transmitting mechanisms include four rotating-type clutches and one stationary-type clutch; and wherein the stationary-type clutch grounds the second member of the fourth planetary gear set to the transmission housing.

3. The transmission of claim 1 , wherein at least two of the torque-transmitting mechanisms are both located in one of the second and the third zones.

4. The transmission of claim 1 , wherein at least two of the torque-transmitting mechanisms are located in the sixth zone.

5. The transmission of claim 1 , wherein the planetary gear sets are positioned in the cavity from the first end wall to the second end wall in the order of first planetary gear set, second planetary gear set, third planetary gear set, and fourth planetary gear set.

The transmission of claim 5 , wherein a first of the five torque-transmitting mechanisms is located in the sixth zone and is selectively engagable to ground the second member of the fourth planetary gear set to the second wall; wherein a second of the five torque-transmitting mechanisms is located in the second zone and is selectively engagable to connect the second member of the first planetary gear set for common rotation with the third member of the third planetary gear set; wherein a third of the five torque-transmitting mechanisms is located in the sixth zone and is selectively engagable to connect the first member of the first planetary gear set for common rotation with the third member of the second planetary gear set; wherein a fourth of the five torque-transmitting mechanisms is located in the second zone and is selectively engagable to connect the first member of the first planetary gear set for common rotation with the third member of the third planetary gear set; and wherein a fifth of the five torque-transmitting mechanisms is located in the sixth zone and is selectively engagable to connect the third member of the second planetary gear set for common rotation with the second member of the fourth planetary gear set.

7. The transmission of claim 1 , wherein the planetary gear sets are positioned in the cavity from the first end wall to the second end wall in the order of first planetary gear set, third planetary gear set, second planetary gear set, and fourth planetary gear set.

The transmission of claim 7 , wherein a first of the five torque-transmitting mechanisms is located in the sixth zone and is selectively engagable to ground the second member of the fourth planetary gear set to the second wall; wherein a second of the five torque-transmitting mechanisms is located in the second zone and is selectively engagable to connect the second member of the first planetary gear set for common rotation with the third member of the third planetary gear set; wherein a third of the five torque-transmitting mechanisms is located in the first zone and is selectively engagable to connect the first member of the first planetary gear set for common rotation with the third member of the second planetary gear set; wherein a fourth of the five torque-transmitting mechanisms is located in the second zone and is selectively engagable to connect the first member of the first planetary gear set for common rotation with the third member of the third planetary gear set; and wherein a fifth of the five torque-transmitting mechanisms is located in the sixth zone and is selectively engagable to connect the third member of the second planetary gear set for common rotation with the second member of the fourth planetary gear set.

9. The transmission of claim 1 , wherein the planetary gear sets are positioned in the cavity from the first end wall to the second end wall in the order of second planetary gear set, first planetary gear set, third planetary gear set, and fourth planetary gear set.

The transmission of claim 9 , wherein a first of the five torque-transmitting mechanisms is located in the sixth zone and is selectively engagable to ground second member of the fourth planetary gear set to the second wall; wherein a second of the five torque-transmitting mechanisms is located in the third zone and is selectively engagable to connect the second member of the first planetary gear set for common rotation with the third member of the third planetary gear set; wherein a third of the five torque-transmitting mechanisms is located in the first zone and is selectively engagable to connect the first member of the first planetary gear set for common rotation with the third member of the second planetary gear set; wherein a fourth of the five torque-transmitting mechanisms is located in the third zone and is selectively engagable to connect the first member of the first planetary gear set for common rotation with the third member of the third planetary gear set; and wherein a fifth of the five torque-transmitting mechanisms is located in the sixth zone and is selectively engagable to connect the third member of the second planetary gear set for common rotation with the second member of the fourth planetary gear set.

11. The transmission of claim 1 , wherein the planetary gear sets are positioned in the cavity from the first end wall to the second end wall in the order of second planetary gear set, third planetary gear set, fourth planetary gear set, and first planetary gear set.

The transmission of claim 11 , wherein a first of the five torque-transmitting mechanisms is located in the fourth zone and is selectively engagable to connect second member of the fourth planetary gear set for common rotation with the third member of the first planetary gear set; wherein a second of the five torque-transmitting mechanisms is located in the second zone and is selectively engagable to connect the first member of the second planetary gear set for common rotation with the third member of the third planetary gear set; wherein a third of the five torque-transmitting mechanisms is located in the sixth zone and is selectively engagable to connect the first member of the first planetary gear set for common rotation with the third member of the second planetary gear set; wherein a fourth of the five torque-transmitting mechanisms is located in the second zone and is selectively engagable to connect the first member of the first planetary gear set for common rotation with the third member of the third planetary gear set; and wherein a fifth of the five torque-transmitting mechanisms is located in the third zone and is selectively engagable to connect the third member of the second planetary gear set for common rotation with the second member of the fourth planetary gear set.

13. The transmission of claim 1 , wherein the first member of the first planetary gear set is a carrier member; wherein the second member of the first planetary gear set is a ring gear member; wherein the third member of the first planetary gear set is a sun gear member;

wherein the first member of the second planetary gear set is a sun gear member; wherein the second member of the second planetary gear set is a ring gear member; wherein the third member of the second planetary gear set is a carrier member;

wherein the first member of the third planetary gear set is a carrier member; wherein the second member of the third planetary gear set is a ring gear member; wherein the third member of the third planetary gear set is a sun gear member;

wherein the first member of the fourth planetary gear set is a carrier member; wherein the second member of the fourth planetary gear set is a ring gear member; and wherein the third member of the fourth planetary gear set is a sun gear member.

The transmission of claim 13 , wherein the first torque-transmitting mechanism is located in one of the first, second, fifth and sixth zones; wherein the second torque-transmitting mechanism is located in one of the second, third and sixth zones; wherein the third torque-transmitting mechanism is located in one of the first, second, and sixth zones; wherein the fourth torque-transmitting mechanism is located in one of the first, second, third, and fifth zones; and wherein the fifth torque-transmitting mechanism is located in one of the first, second, third, fifth, and sixth zones.

The transmission of claim 13 , wherein the first torque-transmitting mechanism is located in one of the first, fifth, and sixth zones; wherein the second torque-transmitting mechanism is located in one of the first, second, and sixth zones; wherein the third torque-transmitting mechanism is located in one of the first and sixth zones; wherein the fourth torque-transmitting mechanism is located in one of the first, second, and sixth zones; and wherein the fifth torque-transmitting mechanism is located in one of the first, fourth, fifth, and sixth zones.

The transmission of claim 13 , wherein the first torque-transmitting mechanism is located in one of the first, second, fifth, and sixth zones; wherein the second torque-transmitting mechanism is located in one of the second, third, and sixth zones; wherein the third torque-transmitting mechanism is located in one of the first, second, and sixth zones; wherein the fourth torque-transmitting mechanism is located in one of the first, third, and fifth zones; and wherein the fifth torque-transmitting mechanism is located in one of the first, second, fifth, and sixth zones.

The transmission of claim 13 , wherein the first torque-transmitting mechanism is located in one of the fourth and fifth zones; wherein the second torque-transmitting mechanism is located in one of the first and second zones; wherein the third torque-transmitting mechanism is located in one of the first, fourth, and sixth zones; wherein the fourth torque-transmitting mechanism is located in one of the first, second, and sixth zones; and wherein the fifth torque-transmitting mechanism is located in one of the first, third, fourth, and sixth zones.
