Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for increasing the storage carbohydrate content of sugarcane plants.

Claims (15)

1. A method for increasing the storage carbohydrate content of a sugarcane plant comprising genetically modifying a sugarcane plant by introducing a single foreign nucleic acid molecule encoding a fructosyl transferase;

wherein the foreign nucleic acid molecule encodes 1-SST; and

wherein said genetically modified sugarcane plant has an increased storage carbohydrate content in comparison with corresponding non-genetically-modified sugarcane wild-type plants.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the foreign nucleic acid molecule is from Cynara scolymus or Helianthus tuberosus.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the 1-SST encoding sequence is fused to a promoter or regulatory DNA sequence which ensures transcription in plant cells.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the promoter is a maize ubiquitin, rice ubiquitin promoter or a banana straek badna virus promoter.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein intron sequences are included between the promoter and the coding region.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the intron sequences are the first intron of the maize sh-1 gene, the first intron of the maize polyubiquitin gene 1, the intron of the rice actin gene, or the first two introns of the Arabidopsis PAT1 gene.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nucleic acid molecule encodes a 1-SST protein comprising an amino acid sequence which has at least 90% identity to SEQ ID NO: 1.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nucleic acid molecule encodes a 1-SST protein comprising an amino acid of SEQ ID NO. 1.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein said genetically modified sugarcane plant has a storage carbohydrate content that is increased 5-80% in comparison with corresponding non-genetically-modified sugarcane wild-type plants.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein said genetically modified sugarcane plant has a storage carbohydrate content that is increased 10-65% in comparison with corresponding non-genetically-modified sugarcane wild-type plants.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein said genetically modified sugarcane plant has a storage carbohydrate content of at least 170 mg/g fresh weight.

12. A method for increasing the total carbohydrate content of a sugarcane plant comprising genetically modifying a sugarcane plant by introducing a single foreign nucleic acid molecule encoding a fructosyl transferase, wherein the nucleic acid molecule encodes a 1-SST, and wherein said genetically modified sugarcane plant has an increased total carbohydrate content in comparison with corresponding non-genetically-modified sugarcane wild-type plants.

13. A method for increasing the storage carbohydrate content of a sugarcane plant consisting essentially of genetically modifying a sugarcane plant by introducing a nucleic acid molecule encoding a fructosyl transferase, wherein the nucleic acid molecule encodes a 1-SST, and wherein said genetically modified sugarcane plant has an increased storage carbohydrate content in comparison with corresponding non-genetically-modified sugarcane wild-type plants.
