Abstract

A gimbaled weapon system (GWS) includes methods for bore sighting a weapon mounted to the GWS. The GWS includes a sensor aligned with the bore of the weapon which generates an image of a target. The target image generated by the sensor is compared with a target image or reticle produced by the sighting system. The target image or reticle of the sighting system is moved or adjusted using operator controls until it is in alignment with the target image produced by the bore-aligned sensor. The procedure can be conducted at different ranges to targets.

Claims (12)

1 . A method of bore sighting a weapon mounted to a gimbaled weapon system (GWS), comprising the following steps, in combination:

a) providing a GWS having a sighting system, a weapon cradle, a weapon having a defined bore, and a sensor aligned with the bore of the weapon, the sighting system receiving signals from an observation unit located remotely from the GWS;

b) observing a target image produced by a sensor aligned with the bore of the weapon at the observation unit;

c) observing a target reticle produced by the sighting system at the observation unit; and

d) bore sighting the weapon by adjusting the target reticle such that it is in alignment with the target image.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the steps b, c, and d are performed for a plurality of different ranges.

3 . A method of bore sighting a weapon mounted to a gimbaled weapon system (GWS), comprising the following steps, in combination:

a) providing a GWS having a sighting system, a weapon cradle, a weapon having a defined bore, and a sensor aligned with the bore of the weapon, the sighting system receiving signals from an observation unit located remotely from the GWS;

b) observing a first target image produced by the sensor aligned with the bore of the weapon at the observation unit;

c) observing a second target image produced by the sighting system at the observation unit; and

d) bore sighting the weapon by adjusting the second target image such that it is in alignment with the first target image.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the steps b, c, and d are performed for a plurality of different ranges.
